Are you looking to 3d, target, or hunt(maybe all 3)? How much are you willing to spend? Do you want classic looks or more modern? We need more info and you need to shoot some bows in order to get a direction.

I am just looking to hunt. I shot one of my friends old shakespeare recurves and really liked it. I don't want to spend more than a couple hundred but I would like to get a decent one. I know pse and samick have some in that price range but know nothing about them. I probably need a 40lb recurve so I have some concerns about speed. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

The Samick recurves I've shot have been pretty good bows and have become my favourite as far as cheap bows are concerned.
Most of them are in fact copys of higher priced American bows.
One that is a direct copy of a Black widow model shot as well as the Widow side by side, but it wasn't as well finished.
I own a Samick recurve that some say has to much hand shock but I've yet to find another bow even close to it price wise that shoots better.
PSE do make a couple of nice recurves but stay away from their Coyote.
I belive the PSE Impala and Kudu shoot pretty good,a couple of the guys in my club have them and seem pleased, allthough I've not shot them myself.
Cheers.

My advice is twofold: first I'd find one of the old target bows from the 1970's, in the mid thirties in draw weight, for maybe $150 or less. There are lots of them on Ebay. These are some of the finest and most lovely bows ever made.

When you have mastered that bow, you could go up a bit in weight for a hunting bow. One of the 1970s models would be a good choice, in the same price range. Or you might choose to go up a notch or two and get a good new American made recurve for a bit more money. I would suggest you check out the custom bowyers in your area for this purpose. These boys are in it for love not money and they can be very helpful to you.

Like me, you might keep that old target bow forever, to work on form, and for the pure pleasure of shooting it.
