With the new DIY tonneau cover, the need for a reaching pole has increased. After looking at a few commercially available options we opted to make our own to combine features from a few poles on the market. Time to fire up the 3D printer again. This time to make a hook for the end of the pole.

Then bend a hook from a piece of EMT conduit and put the printed hook in one end and a spring detent in the other.

The poll will serve more than one purpose so it needs to be extendable/collapsible. This is a window washers pole that goes from 4ft to 8 ft.

Because It snows here in WI and the tonneau cover will need cleaning as will the bed of the truck so the head needs to be easily changed so the pole can have multiple uses.

In the storage/collapsed mode it will act as a stop bar to keep things from sliding forward in the bed.

Now because its so dark under the new cover, lighting is the next step.

A very short video of the pole in use.

I use of of the old 4" paint roller handles with a 4ft extension. works great.

That slide out bed beats the H--- out of the pole & make it easier to load the back of the truck.

$1300 seems like a bit much for an item not desired by the end user. It certainly has its applications for those in need of such a thing if the truck has a topper/cap. For the intended use, the pole is the better solution for this user. I could see perhaps that slide out being useful if one had a cap/topper but with a tonneau cover the pole makes the most sense from a cost and east standpoint.

For years I've used a plain ole' sheet of 1/2" plywood for the 6' beds of my Tacomas. Cut it to fit/slide between the wheel wells and a half-inch short of the tailgate, sand any rough edges, drill a few 1" holes for finger grabs near the end (or attach a rope handle), and simply slide the sheet in/out as needed to add/remove stuff. Cost about $20 for the plywood, can stain to match your truck if desired, cheap, fairly light, easily removable, won't wear out. Also doubles as a handy table when needed, just lower the tailgate and slide the sheet out, put sticks or peg legs in the finger holes to hold the end up.

The bed slides can be nice but if you fill them up and something falls off in front of the wheel well to the side, it's not fun getting it out and it's usually big enough and falls just right to stop the slide from being able to be pushed all the way back in.

I do like the reaching pole, I got a commercial made on for christmas one year but since I don't have a topper or tonneau, I only use it occasionally.

I had one of the roll out beds years ago. It was great for me as I used it to load product for shows. Heavy boxes were a bear to load in a pick up with a cap. Sold the truck with the bed included. Now use a van which can be a pain for this old man to get in and out of to load. I now use a 6' wooden hoe. $12 at lowes. wfm
