It’s not a true DIY because I bought the wooden mount itself, however I did add the shotgun shell, the feet and the wooden outline of the state I shot the tom in! I think it’s a tiny upgrade to the basic fan mount!
you can look for a kit online. there are some nice laser engraved plaques out there. i personally like to set each tail feather one at a time and then hotglue on a piece of cardstock or light cardboard. this gets all the meat off so it's nice and clean and i can get the feathers even and symmetrical. I'll then cut and glue feathers off the back to cover all the "down" like portion of the feather. that way only feather tips are exposed above the wood as opposed to the vanes of the feathers
if you're doing an entire backhide, you'll need to flesh/degrease the skin. at that point, I'd suggest using a taxidermist (you can diy, but it's a bit of a hassle)
I like this one. the skull on there is different and really makes everything stand out.
