How do you tell the difference between a Jake and tom

Jakes have a little stubby beard plus they dont have a full fan. Their middle tails feathers will be longer than the rest. Easiest things to look for. Good luck!

A jake will have a short beard usually 2" - 4" and the 4 center tail feathers are longer than the rest. Usually much skinnier than a Tom too.

As the others have said, jakes have short beards and the middle feathers on their fan are longer, while toms have full fans with all feathers the same length. Here's a pic of some jakes just so you can get an idea of how the fan looks.

You can tell by their gobble sometimes also it won't be as deep or loud and might seem to get cutoff because a it's vocal cords aren't fully developed

Their snood isn't as developed either. Fan if strutting as stated before and snood/beard.
