I have mine set toan inch brom the end of the shaft. +/- a little wont change anything. The theory behind it says that the farther back you put them, the faster they will stabilize. If you are tuned properly, it wont change anything.

I fletch my shafts 1 1/4 in. from the end of the shaft, this helps sometimes with FOC.

The farther back you place your vanes the more leverage (stability and spin) they will have on your arrow. However, I don't want the vanes touching my face or headcover, so mine are placed 1-1/2" forward. I don't think I'm giving up much in the way of control and I don't have to worry about inadvertantly affecting arrow launch.
