Dont have any options nearby for custom mix fertilizer for my clover plot. I just bought 16.5 acres this year and planted a little over half acre plot. I did not do a soil test (I know I know), but when prepped i used triple 13 fertilozer and the clover is doing great. Have already mowed once and sprayed with arrest max and slay, as well as mixed in clover fuel when I sprayed that (antler kings liquid fertilizer) and it seems to be working well so far.
Around September I'd like to drop down some granule fertilizer. I cant find anything near me with low nitrogen. I know a 10 10 10 or 13 13 13 would give the weeds a bump but I also know it will help the clover ... would i be safe to just go that route? I am staying on top of the weeds, plan on mowing again later this summer and spraying once more possibly. I know I'm already doing more for my plot than the average joe I talk to so I dont think I can go wrong. I could easily do a liquid fertilizer but I'd prefer to do granular as it's more of a slow release.

If the weeds worry you winter rye may help keep them choked out.

Why fertilize at all? Until you do a soil test you could just be throwing money away, especially if you're adding nitrogen. Adding any fertilizer with nitrogen at this point will just feed weed growth. Keeping weeds out of a pure clover stand will be a full time job.

As buffinator mentioned above, if weed suppression is a goal, you could add a cereal grain to help with this.

Great minds and whatnot.

I haven't read all 1,534 threads in this particular sub forum, but I have learned a whole whole lot.

Sad Soil test never have Worked for me after I gave up and Yet my Plots do well green Come Mid Spring and SUmmer and when I plant more in Fall it is all Green! I was advise I "could not have that much sand yet the top inch is some organic material under that is SAND! And When You take a sample you are to take it from several spots where you looking to Plant. SO Wasting 2 years I Just 'Plant my Seed apply some lime and 12-12-12 and I plant Clovers (Ladino, Med Red, Mammoth, Aslike) Brassica, Chicory, Small Burnett, Iron / Clay Peas, Come Fall I add on with some Antler King (Fall Winter Spring) And some Tecomate (Rake and Shake) and some strips of Winter Cereal Rye. Never worry about adding "nitrogen" as with Sand It pulls away anything quickly and with a few good rains I have lush green plots. So Soil Sample never had "results" so I just Planted what works waiting for result just delays planting when rains are coming and there! Do what Works for some I have never needed a Soil Test and I have plant plots for 25 Years as well as Fruit Trees, Mast Nut Trees and others and 95 have made unless a Bear trashes the tree. So I never get what is so important about a soil test I never Need one and plots do well... Make me wonder why so much hype about Soil Testing If conditions are good ir will Grow and the Deer Hammer my Plots year round Guess I just get it done... And Winter Rye will grow just about any where even in sand with nothing added... If You were to read the package most Brands suggest 19-19-19 for their seed. Never read they only need 00-20-20 or 00-00-64 to have them grow. As these are readily available but from a specialty AG Supply Store. And Never needed to mix anything fertilizer either. My trail Cams have deer in my Plots year round that proves to me that soil tests are a myth... Even with Sand has the main soil type I have had for the 29 years owning my property... Some need to stop spreading Myths Over-rated as After 4 times I can say it is!

This is what I would do. If you can't find 0-0-60 or even something like 6-24-24 I would just spend the fertilizer money on Winter Rye seed. Broadcast and mow the clover tight. The mowing should finish off the summer weeds and the rye will do more for weed suppression and nutrient mining than would be done with 10-10-10 fertilizer feeding the clover and weeds.

If your clover is growing well, I would put some 0-0-60 (or 0-24-24 but try not to add nitrogen) on it, if you can get it, after you mow. I don't do soil samples unless I am changing my food plot around. I have been planting the same 3 food plots for 15 yrs and I have done 3 soil samples on them. Each has told me about the same thing each time. I put a light coat of lime down each year, to maintain the PH. I don't worry about weeds in the clover unless it is to the point that they are over taking it. At that point I will start over. My first clover plot I did was immaculate, I then watched deer walk thru it to my neighbors weed field and eat there. So in the clover I maintain the weeds by mowing. Enjoy your food plots.
