Guys,

I've got a couple of tree stands that I want to leave in the woods for the season. I know that there are treestand thieves out there. I've read some bad reviews of the Master Lock Python treestand lock. What's the best way to secure a tree stand to deter a potential thief?

Thanks!

I use a heavy duty chain (Log Chain) that I wrap in Brown Duct Tape to keep it quiet. For the lock I use "Best" Brand Security locks we use at the Jail, that have a shroud around the hasp. For extra measures I run bolts with washers through the chain in several places. The might have bolt cutters on them while stand hunting, but I doubt they have wrenches. The chain I use is so thick that even with bolt cutters while hanging from my tree steps you could not get enough leverage to cut it unless you are the Hulk.

same here, my chains are so heavy I hate to haul them. Most of my stands are cheaper stands and I muck up all of my stands to look old and funky, less value on Craigs list. I also engrave my name and phone number on them deep and large and on the front. I lock them closed and take my sticks.

Hear come the flood of "get a climber" or "don't leave it" posts, but anyway...

Through hardened (not just case hardened) grade 80 3/ 8ths inch chain, or thicker if you can stand it, with the best lock you can afford (not that Masterlock crap). The best chain in the world ain't worth a damn without an equal or better lock. Be prepared to spend $60-100. Might be worth more than your stand even, but it's worth it just to have it there instead of the long walk back to the truck cussing. I personally use EZY Climb Detachable Tree Steps, too. Best things I ever bought to secure my stand.

Wouldn't it be better to remove the 2 lower sections of ladders? I can see the thieving dirtbags stealing your lower steps! Or am I wrong?

Thanks!

big mistake people do is use coated cable. if the cable is coated its easy to cut with a tree saw. whether saw or bolt cutters its much easier to cut coated cables. with uncoated its much harder. the saw teeth get hung on the small wires and bolt cutters smash the cable and has a hard time cutting all the way through.

I truly believe that locks only keep the honest honest! I still lock all my cams and stands. But if someone really wants Your stuff it's only a quick trip to the tool box to get that portable grinder with a cut off wheel (lost a camera that way). But you know I haven't had any other problems with the python cables. And it did take the cutoff saw to get it.

Luckily I had two cams in the area and they caught the guy based off photos from the cam he didn't see/steal!

Make it as hard as possible to steal and hope to keep the honest honest!!!

i use Python cable locks. the truth is, if someone wants your stand, they will get it. chains and locks unfortunately just keep the honest man honest.
