I went to order a pocket knife from them today (already $79.99 on sale) and those pompous people wanted FOURTEEN DOLLARS to ship the dang thing to me! Needless to say, I didn't check out once I saw that. $14 for a pocket knife.... *sigh*. I can't STAND people who use S&H as a way to funnel extra profits. We all know it doesn't cost $14 to mail a pocket knife to a border state! And what's worse? That was the CHEAPEST option available to those of us who do not wish to drive to Ashley, IN and pick it up in their store. I always loved getting their catalogs and ordering my traditional arrows from them, but I just don't think I can force myself to shop there anymore after this... heartbreaking. :(

PS They are only doing free S&H on orders of $250 right now, but if anyone else knows of any online coupon codes that work there right now, I'm all ears. I don't even want free shipping exactly, I just want FAIR shipping. This is outrageous.

My business sells on eBay, and I can tell you they are making a nice little profit on those extra shipping costs. Add in the the fact that companies like that get a bigger discount on shipping the more they ship out, a pocket knife to a neighboring state even Priority Mail is not more the $5-6. It is what it is though.

Sure, the shipping companies have to profit and they do some. But $14/lb? I can get Lobster cheaper than that in Illinois!

I'm a veteran and I don't ask for veteran's discounts; I don't think I deserve special treatment for doing what I was blessed to be physically able to do and I was glad to do it. That being said, 3R advertises a 10% military discount on their site which I may have to use just to get the total down to about where it should be if their shipping costs were reasonable, which I hate to do but my land, have mercy!

If this keeps up, I can easily see more folks purchasing from their local bow shops.

My rule of thumb is, and has been............if my local shop has, or can get, an item for the same price [or close to it] that I would have to pay online [including shipping] then I purchase from the shop. If not, then I order from on online retailer.

If online retailers start gouging on shipping prices then this could tip the scales for me.

Only problem would be availability.

So this begs the question of, have shipping prices actually gone up that much?

If so, it makes no sense considering fuel prices have been low for a while now and are forecast to remain low for the foreseeable future???

Perhaps they are trying to make up for the slump in sales considering the economy has been in decline and more and more folks are now unemployed?

Shipping charges do stink. But the reality is they are high. So either bite the bullet or find it local where the shipping is folded into the price and you don't see it. When buying on line like that it takes some one to pull the item, pack it, label it and make sure it ships, wages, packing/handling then the ship charges to them all gets passed to the customer.

shipping prices through ups and fedex went up dramatically when fuel was high. they havent come back down. theoretically, the "handling" is to pay someone in the back, the shipping department, to put the packages together and get them out. like anything, look at the total cost. its only a scam if they dont disclose.

I always come back to when I ordered a trailer kit and delivery price was $7 shipped across the country, it was three huge boxes and like 150lbs total. And then I order something for my bow and it comes in a tiny package that fits in my mailbox and weighs about 8 ounces and they want that same $7, just proves that more goes into setting s/h price than dimensions/weight/distance, etc. It's frustrating but there's not a whole lot you can do about it, especially if it's something that you just can't find locally.

I buy locally when they have what I want but that is rarely the case and ordering stuff seems to take forever. I can go home and order it online and have it weeks before the local shops get it in. And then, bought locally also incurs almost 8% sales tax so its pretty close price wise to paying the outrageous shipping.

I to do not understand shipping prices. I can go to my local post office get a prepaid box for 5 bucks and ship anything I choose as long as it fits. Companies can also do the same thing. They can also go and pick up a bulk of these boxes and have them on hand, I know this because my father does it with his business shipping out metal samples. I feel it is just another way for companies to try and make money off the people who need items and ones who do not have a proshop or box store to shop at.

Most shipping companies are charging by dimensions now. Weight and distance also factor in, but dimensional pricing is becoming the biggest factor. I'm not sure how some companies do it, but at FedEx, any time a package goes through an automated sorter facility(all Hubs and most terminals in large cities) the package gets measured, weighed, and scanned for destination. No matter what any person or company inputs into the system for dimensions and weights when they first ship it, the scan tunnels will apply the actual measures when the package goes through, and then the final bill comes when the package is delivered. Obviously the companies that ship more get volume discounts, and those are typically the companies that offer free shipping or free shipping at a low order threshold. Some of these smaller companies do not care to pass on their volume discounts to the customer, and some prefer to charge a flat rate to make it easier on them and their web-designers, no matter what you are ordering.

It will be increasingly harder for even the larger companies to offer free shipping, especially on larger items. People have gotten so used to ordering things like furniture and the like online, and getting it shipped for free. Companies are paying a lot to ship those kinds of items and somehow they will need to pass that cost onto the customer.

As for a knife, $14 is beyond any reasonable shipping cost for an item like that. That company will likely continue to lose customers until they figure out how to manage their shipping costs and pass those savings onto their customers.

Amazon is starting to make more products "Add-on" items, which need to be ordered with other more expensive items to be considered for free shipping. I think you will start to see more and more items become add-on items, and likely some sort of structure to ensure people aren't making 5-6 separate orders a week.

Over the years archers were paying higher prices for toys that became over priced. We went to mail order to save a buck or two and in doing so hurt our local shops big time. Now there is a balancing. Shipping can be more costly than buying locally. We are consumers that want what we want when we want it. There is always a price tag consumers pay added to the over priced toys that are becoming impossibly for the average archer to keep up with.
UPS, USP, FED EX are becoming crazy expensive. The solution, buy locally or buy on-line only when there's free shipping. However, when we buy over priced equipment and don't give a hoot because we want, need or have to have it NOW, bite the bullet and remember there is a price attached to gratification.

I recently ordered about $80 of stuff from Great Britain. Shipping by royal mail was $5. It took about a week to get here.

Bowhunters Supply Store (not superstore) charges $0.99 per item.

I've largely given up on buying metal for my lathe online. The S&H costs more than the metal, even aluminum.

Some online stores look at shipping as a profit center and try to make money on it. They are pretty easy to spot. Other stores look at it as a cost of doing business and simply try to recover the actual cost. Everybody wants to make more money, but it doesn't take much to find a point of resistance where people won't buy online because of the cost of shipping.

I went to buy an item from Eders and saw shipping was 10 dollars. I signed up for the bowhunters club for military/police department to get the discount and the price of the item went down 4 dollars but shipping went up 3 dollars. Don't understand how you are showing people that they are in the military/police or me Dive and Rescue diver for the county that you appreciate their service when you are really only saving a dollar. The price of the item was 34 dollars and 13 to ship....really. Like others have said I would rather buy from someone that is local or offers free shipping with a higher price at least they are not trying to deceive you on how much you are going to pay.

I sold a set of limbs on here in the classified section. I had purchased the limbs in December of last year and then decided they weren't what I wanted. I'd kept the box they came in when shipped to me. They came via the USPS and the cost of $7.05 was clearly marked on the box. The limbs came to Indiana from North Carolina.

When I went to the post office to send them to the buyer in Washington state the cheapest shipping fee was $11.51 ! Apparently it costs more to ship from Indiana to Washington than from N. Carolina to Indiana. I questioned the postal clerk and got a shrug and a "that's what it is" response.

I guess it will make me think about the price of an item I sell when I use the phrase "tyd" as part of the selling price. Perhaps, as it appears that distance is a factor, it will be prudent to determine where the buyer is located before determing the final selling price inclusive of shipping.

Had the exact same experience with a set of draw mods that I sold. Same package they came in shipped USPS to me for 2.95.... When I used the same package to ship to my buyer (less distance), USPS told me 6.95 was the lowest rate possible! I got so pissed off I nearly paid the 9.00plus to send the package UPS!! Rip-off.
