If the opportunity presents itself to shoot a buck before the rut should you shoot him or wait until the rut starts to give him a chance to spread his genes? This is only my second season hunting and still have a ton of questions.

My opinion...shoot the buck you want when you are given the shot. There is no guarantee you will get a 2nd chance at a buck. Especially during the Rut when they are running around all over the place, sometimes traveling several miles in a day.

If you get a chance at a good buck then take it. It maybe the only one you see all year then you will have to kick yourself for the next 9 months until the next season starts

I would shoot a buck if the shot was right and he was the one i wanted.

I very seldom see the same buck (nice, mature ones) more than once, anyway.

If he's the one you want, then by all means take 'em when can do so. If he's not up to your standards maturity wise then pass and try for another or some does.

Good luck & hunt safely

August 26th

I get my 'chance' starting on the 26th....Now given that chance, you can bet I'll be taking it!

I'm with everyone else on this too...take the buck when he presents the shot
and up to the individuals standards. A great question though and definitely something to discuss for sure as that would take some serious restraint on the hunter's part to not take a monster when he has the chance ,so that buck could spread his seed only to probably never see him again...cool thread.

Never, EVER, pass up a shot on a buck you are after. There's no guarantee that you'll ever see him again period, let alone again during the season. I don't care if it's the first day of the season or the first week of November, if a buck I am after gives me a shot an arrow is on it's way ;)

For the record, don't forget that a big old buck has been passing on his genes for a few years now, so don't even worry about that aspect of it.

If you dont plan on shooting a buck early in the season, then dont go the spots where you expect to kill your buck. It's senseless. I have buck spots, and I have doe spots. I usually hunt the spots where I see a lot of does, and the occasional young buck in the early season. This is agricultural fields. I try to get my doe outta the way. Then I will go into my buck spots.

If it's a buck I want, I'll shoot it anytime during the season. If it's not a buck I want, I'll never shoot it anytime during the season.

So, if you want it, shoot it. You'll likely not see it again this season. But stick to your guns, if it doesn't meet your management goals, don't poke it the last day of the season just because it's the last day of the season.
