Curious who really likes what they have since I’m planning on getting one this year. Havalon? HSS? Others? It would be for butchering only, not general knife work or edc. Thanks!

You can do it with a flathead screwdriver, a flat piece of metal or something pretty easy but pliers work fast and are safe.

I have a Havalon, a Weibe, and an Outdoor edge. 99.9% of the time I use the Weibe handle with Havalon blades (the Havalon blades are better and stay sharp longer than the Weibe blades). Idk why I even keep the Outdoor edge? It’s not near as good as the other.

This is the Weibe knife handle that I use. It’s way better than the Havalon Piranta handle.

I’ve dressed and butchered 7-8 in the past couple years with the outdoor edge lite. As long as you stay off bone it stays super sharp for at least 2 deer. Way better than sharpening knives after every kill
I did at least two deer with the same blade last year, I think it was three though. Can’t remember, but you can definitely get multiple uses out of a blade.

One thing I don’t like though is you need to clean the spot where the blade goes in carefully to make sure you get all the blood out. I may use mine more for skinning going forward to avoid that (that’ll keep the boning knives sharp anyway while I’m butchering so I’m still glad I have it).

Havalon all the way. I have a piranta and somehow the lock broke so I called them they said send it to them so I did and less than 2 weeks later I had a new knife with a few more blades to go with it. Excellent customer service and warranty. I also have the Jim Shockey edition as well. Havalon has come out with a new knife with thicker blades so you might want to look at them again. Just my thoughts though

I use a Gerber Vital on occasion. It does the job just fine and I’ve had no issues with it. Very light and the knife plus the little case to hold extra blades takes up very little room in a pack. I just prefer my fixed blades to it. Only complaint I have is I hate cleaning all the nooks and crannies from a folding knife after using it. So much simpler cleaning a fixed.
