Where should I sight my first pin,25 or 30. I'm sighted in right now at 20 but there is almost no gap between the 20 and 30 pin. When I use my 30 pin at 30yards both pins cover the target. I shoot an 82nd that is shooting a 390 grain arrow at 297 fps.
Imagine the arc of the arrow. 25 yards is typically close to the highest point on that arc.
First pin at 25 equates to point and shoot out to 30. Next pin at 35 equates to point and shoot from around 28 or 29 to 37-38.
Shoot the gap if you know the exact distance. No time to range or if he comes in fast from an odd direction shoot the pin and you will be in the kill zone.
If its purely a hunting rig...this will save you in range estimation and pin gapping on quick shots. Will expand your gaps a little as well.
I have my pins set at 23,30,35,40,45 and I am shooting upper 280's fps with my target setup.I use the same settings for hunting(230's to 250's fps).I use .019 pins on 1 bow and .010 on the other bow.I WISH I would have done this years ago.
Some tricks are to widen the gap is to extend the site bar and/or use smaller pins.
I have mine at 20, I wouldnt put it much more than that. If your getting double coverage move your second pin lower for the gap since most archery shots are 25 and in at least you will be dead on there and not guessing.
Is your sight mounted so that the guard (Pins) are close to the riser? I ask because shooting at 292fps, with one of my bows, and having the sight guard (pins) out only 4" from my riser my top pin 20y and my second pin being 30y have at least a 1/16" between them.....and that just confuses the heck out of me why yours are almost touching...???
I set my first pin so i have a point blank range. I dont want to be more than 3in high at any point and no more than 3in low at any point. At 300fps this is usually 26to27 yds. This gives me a point blank range of around 31to32 yds. So from 0 to 32 yds I can aim center mass and still be in the kill. My pin set up usually is 27,35,45,55,65. Most of my shots are less than 30yds so center mass and let'em rip.
