Wisconsin Crossbow Issues

Just got the latest issue of the Wisconsin Outdoor News, and it looks like Kazmerski the new NRB board chair is still pursuing changes to crossbow usage and seasons. Any of the NRB board members have the right to include questions on the April Conservation Congress hearings in April. He is submitting a question that asks " Would you support the NRB request from the DNR another review of the impacts of the crossbow season on Wisconsin's gun deer season?

Keep in mind, that in October of 2019, the DNR published a 140 page report on crossbows' in hunting. It was the most in depth research ever done in the entire united states. It covered many sources and included information and findings from other states. It concluded that the effects of crossbow were of no real concern in hunting and deer management. It also concluded that the issues with crossbows was of a social nature and not a biological issue. Actually the Wisconsin DNR supports crossbows in deer hunting.

Kaz and his counterparts are still on the premise that the crossbow deer harvest is spiraling out of control and all the bucks are being harvested before the gun hunters have a chance at them in the nine day gun season. The main goal is to alter/change/shorten the crossbow season Ultimately restricting its use during the prime time rut period.

Strangely, in my recent past research on that particular subject, I could find no evidence of such concern by gun hunters. I talked with two local game wardens and also a regional warden supervisor with control of a 15 county area and numerous wardens in central Wisconsin. I asked them if they heard of any comments from upset gun hunters regarding crossbow harvest rates,, They all said they have not heard any such complaints. I also have talked with a representative from Whitetails unlimited with their home office in Sturgeon Bay, Wi. They also said they have not heard of any such comments. I have also talked with numerous hunters, and again, no such comments.

Reality is, Kaz stands with the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association with their never ending anti-crossbow campaign.

The following is a link to the 2019 Wisconsin DNR Crossbow Report. As I said previously it is 140 pages long, and not only in depth but very informative. If you don't want to read it in its entirety, each section gives a summarizing conclusion.

It is important to get the word out about this, get involved and vote on this question. The Spring hearings will again be virtual and beginning Monday April 11th and go thru April 14. Anybody, including nonresidents can vote on the questions.

I will later post up links and info on the hearing and participation.

I am a non resident firearms deer hunter in Wisconsin, hunting in Barron County, near Cumberland. I dont bow hunt in Wisconsin anymore, but I did for 25 years. I dont see how crossbow hunters are having a negative impact on deer populations and buck mortality. In my 25 years of bowhunting in WI I think I only saw one crossbow hunter, other than my elderly father during bow season, prior to the nine day gun season.

I am not a crossbow user, but I am a crossbow supporter, so I felt I would comment.

I live and hunt in Southern wi near the Illinois border. Around us, there is increasing crossbow use, and the kill is going up. I believe equal to or higher than regular compound or traditional bows, and possibly even higher than rifle.

I personally don't have a problem with it because it doesn't effect me a bit what someone shoots a deer with on land I don't have access to hunt.

But, I think what is happening is a lot of gun hunters are switching to crossbows. Possibly weekend hunters that want to enjoy a few more weekends in the outdoors, but dont nessisarily want to spend a ton of time learning vertical bows. Some may still use guns as well.

Our hunting average age is increasing. I think a lot of hunters are choosing to shoot their buck with a crossbow during warmer weather, with less pressure, and in more of a deer being deer type environment rather than relying on pressure and the big deer drives we used to see.

Around my area there is a decent amount of pressure opening weekend, and Thanksgiving, but otherwise it doesn't even feel like gun season.

A lot of bucks that probably would have been shot by the same hunter with a gun got shot a few weeks earlier with a crossbow. Whats the difference?

If you think crossbows have no effect on the herd, archery season or gun season then you haven't been paying attention.

I know of a pile of guys who are zero threat to a deer with a compound bow, however they are quite efficient with an x bow.

I am not generally opposed to crossbows, I just thought they had their place, IE. folks not capable of hunting with a compound or their own season, using them during firearms seasons.

I agree with you with some xbow users suck with a vertical bow. But with that said I personally know hand ful of guys that should not be hunting with a vertical bow but they do and on avg they wound/killed 3 to 4 deer with their vertical bows but never find those deer (usually In guts) then they end up getting lucky and kill 2 with their vertical bows so possible they killed 6 deer already in bow season then they goto gun season and shoot 2 to 4 more deer with their guns.
Once the xbow law was came into effect here in MI those 3 guys now didn't have hardly any gut shots or wounds they usually killed the first two deer that walked by and were out of the woods till gun season.

So when a deer isn't found it's not reported in any states I know of. So in Mi it looks like the kill goes up with xbow but all those wounded or not found deer are not counted but in the 3 ppl case I know the actual kill rate went down due to xbow. I know small example but it's what I see.

Where MI is messed up is no mandatory deer check for any deer and hands out 10 doe tags now plus your buck tags can be used as doe tags.

I personally don't know any gun only hunter that went to xbow to kill deer early but I'm sure their is.

The Wisconsin DNR has stated many times the crossbows are not a negative effect on the deer herd. Additionally they say there are still to many deer in most of the state, to be in the carrying capacity of the land. The 140 page 2019 research and crossbow study compiled by the Wi. DNR, concluded the crossbow issues are social and not biological.

Following is the link for the Wisconsin Conservation Congress spring hearing questionnaire home page.
Annual Spring Public Hearing and County Meeting | Wisconsin Conservation Congress | Wisconsin DNR

dnr.wisconsin.gov
dnr.wisconsin.gov

Click on the blue highlighted box "Submit spring hearing input"

The registration is pretty much straight forward and simple. If you are from out of State (Yes, even non residents can provide input) Where it says to select state of residence, scroll down on the list to "other ". For County select "out of state". The box asking for DNR customer ID number and also the selection of counties that you recreate in is optional but not required to fill in. Additionally, anybody can participate and answer questions on the hearing, there are no restrictions.

If you want to do the whole questionnaire it will take approximately 25 minutes, However if you are just concerned about the crossbow question, when you sign you have the option of selecting a category of questions. For the crossbow question only, click on "Natural Resources Board ( Questions 17 - 18) Doing this part only takes about 5 minutes.

If you do take part in the complete questionnaire or certain categories that have questions you are not concerned about, they strongly suggest checking the "no Opinion" selection.

If you are supportive of and want to protect your rights of crossbow hunting in Wisconsin, It is definitely time to get involved and vote "NO" on question #17

If anybody has any questions or would like more info, please feel free to PM me.

This spring hearing questionnaire is open online until 7PM Thursday evening April 14th. Don't delay, and also get the word out to friends and family.

It's not definite as to how soon the results will be tabulated and made public, but I will monitor and relay the info as soon as it does become available.

THANK YOU

My 88 yo moms $4000 ravin 29 is a 100 yard gun in 3 practice shots vs. hundreds of hours of practice with a vertical bow. Instant gratification. Ban scopes on xguns.. and no issues. most of the west bans scopes on xgun and ml.they Won't spend the time to learn vertical? Pickup an xgun, when they should just wait till rifle season but hey, they can use a 100 yar weapon during the rut!!!.lazy imo. wi. Had a great archery heritage, now over 50% are killed with xguns.. Yes on 17, but the cc has been a joke forever and the wdnr wants more dead deer.

I always lay out this scenario. Imagine during the rut in any state and that state made that week traditional archery equipment only. A good percentage of compound hunters would also start practicing with traditional equipment to be able to hunt that week. How many crossbow hunters would pick up the traditional bow? My guess is next to zero if not literally zero. Same reason why gun hunters don’t bow hunt at all.

A lot of crossbow guys like to point out how far compound archery technology has come and it’s still pretty easy. That’s BS. It still requires a lot of range time.

Been bowhunting since 2002. I shot a hell of a lot better in 2006 than I did now. Now we just have more high tech gear to spend money on that’s supposed to make us shoot better but in reality doesn’t. The guys shooting 60xs today would still be shooting 60xs in 2005.
