I thought it would help out people who are struggling with some of the words and phrases that they've read and heard surrounding deer hunting. Please add your definitions to assist others on this site.
SHOOTER
How to interpret it:
Shooter: adj. ~ Often heard on hunting shows and forums: "That's a shooter." Def. A deer of the size that I'm being paid to shoot on camera.
What it should mean:
Shooter: adj. ~ Def. Any deer that you have in your sights and are about to release an arrow or bullet on.
SET
How to interpret it:
Set: noun ~ Often heard on hunting shows and forums: "What do you think of this set," "We changed sets." Def. One or two treestands place by someone else, usually an outfitter, over a hunting area.
What it should mean:
Set: noun ~ two of a similar item, ie. a salt and pepper shaker. b) verb ~ to place something somewhere, ie. Please set the vase on the table.
140, 150, 160... class
How to interpret it:
Braggadocios Statement ~ Most definitely spoken by TV "professional hunters" and on forums by people trying to bring attention to themselves. "This is a 140 class class deer, but I'm going to pass because he's not what we're looking for."
What it should mean:
Descriptive numeric value ~ Any freshman level course at the college/university level. The one (1) designating a required class to take the next level class.
This is just a start and I encourage others to add their definitions to truly be "Archers helping archers."
