So being a formere (reformed?) trapshooter, I've been paying close attention to the Illionois DNR's World Shooting Complex. While I'm sure the Illinois Tax Payers probably are not enthralled about building this thing, it is quite impressive: http://dnr.state.il.us/Worldshooting/home.htm.

It is designed to accomodate all shooting venues including 3d archery. Anyone heard any noise about possible major shoots there? I wonder if the ASA will look to move Metropolis there . . .

WOW!

That looks like it is going to be quite the facility when completed. Hopefully they can keep it busy enough to re-coup some of the investment and make it self supporting. If it becomes a money sink for tax dollars all of the non-shooting/non-supporting state residents are going to throw a fit.

Again . . . not being a resident of Illinois but once it is built they can probably throw a fit all they want. So far though, it seems successful. They've held several championship events there, some minor ones, and the Grand American Trapshoot (the site's premier event) will be held there later this month. You can see by the sponsors/vendors etc. that it is really geared around that. But they will be looking to get more and more events there.

It's got a great vendor building, the central shoot building is fantastic, with lockers, etc. They have wireless internet, a huge camping facility . . looks like it would be a great place for a major 3d shoot.

ASA will probley not be moving their from Metropolis. Sparta is not a very big town and there is no easy way of getting there. Somebody thought it would be a pretty great idea to build this moster in the middle of cornfield. Right in the middle of BFE!! Working for IDNR I have gotten to tour the place and although it is a very nice complex the area resources just arn't there. No major state highways or interstates for miles, not to mention motels and restaurants. Theres only a hand full of trees that could provide enough shade for one person.

Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding, we have a winner.

It's going to be worthless when IL bans the guns many people use to shoot clays. I don't think people are going to flock here to use 410s and 20ga to shoot clays.

If it becomes a money sink for tax dollars all of the non-shooting/non-supporting state residents are going to throw a fit.
I'm a NRA member and I don't like it.
So we can invite people in from other states to shoot here while we continually have to fight for our own 2nd amendment rights? (I'm not joking about them trying to ban shotguns.)
We invite non-residents to come here and buy ammo, but we have have to be registered to do the same.

If it would happen to bring money into the state and line the pockets of the Chicago politicians enough to get them to lay off the residents I'd be happy.
But what will happen is gladly take the gun money from the non-resident shooters while continually walking over the residents.

I visited the place for the first time this last Saturday to watch a little of the "Randolph County Ruckus", the SASS Illinois championship shoot. Unfortunately, it was hotter 'n hades this last weekend (still is), but they had a good turnout nonetheless.

The place is absolutely HUGE compared to the ATA's old digs, and there appears to be enough room for just about any type of shooting discipline. This being Illinois, I'll not hold my breath for a 600 or 1000 yd high power range, but a 300 yd range wouldn't surprise me.

The place is somewhat isolated - but I see that as a BIG plus. Any location that had interstate access and an abundance of lodging would surely succomb to urban sprawl in short order.

I think this thing will go over.I think they will get a big draw from a lot of shoting sports that have any kind of big shoots to be held(i.e.,Grand American Trapshoot,World 3-D,etc.etc...) because it is about as centrally located as you can get.Now people from one side of the country don't have the worry of going to the other side for any big events, which should equal good crowds IMO.
