I just got a GoPro Hero 3 black, and want to know if any of you guys have ever used one of these things while hunting.
I have my normal HD Handycam, but it's a PITA to use unless I'm filming, not hunting.

Gimme your experiences with these types of POV cams.

I've never used one but I would think it just may make a guy a better hunter when in close- you have to move really slow for good footage

I have one as well that I'll be taking this season. The footage is great, I havent used it for hunting yet but last seasons ski footage came out awesome.

There is no zoom however and things tend to look farteher away than they are so getting close will definitly make for better footage.

Have fun.

they're light, easy to use, good video quality(not so much on the sound), and anything under 50 yards will be captured pretty decently. you could buy the LCD back pack too for footage review. i have the original HD, but i hear the newer ones have terrible battery life. might want to pack an extra one or two of those.

DONT try to retrieve it from your pack to capture a shot on a bull spooking the whole dam herd away(dont ask). JUST SHOOT THE ELK!!

Gonna wear a head mount (strap)

That's not going to work too well... Unless you do a little modification. Have you tried shooting your bow with the camera on your head? I have and you get a great view of your bow and string... and little else. if you can add an extension to either get the camera above your bow or off to the side you'll be great. Directly mounted to the headband doesn't work.

A lot of folks will make a bare that sticks off to the side. Attach it to your hip, etc. Gotta get the camera out of the direct line or in front of the bow.

Not yet. Just got the head strap today, and should get the GoPro tomorrow. I was planning on shooting with it in the next few dys.

Try the chest mount , as long as it does not interfere with the bow string ie... you can always shift it to one side or just mount it to the stabilizer or use the sticky mount on the riser or sight . Or wear antlers on your head like the *****'s and mount it to them !. Don't laugh that's probably the best option , two birds with one stone ( arrow) !
You won't see the arrow much past 30 yds though .

Pat, you ought to change your luck up and just take the Black Widow. Trust your shooting and kill a big one.
I will have to kill a deer with the widow before I try to take an elk with it. I don't need to keep adding to the "challenge", its already tough enough for me.

I don't know about ya'll, but when I shoot my bow my chest is 90 degrees to the target. If you add the 3-axis mount your bow string is gonna catch the camera.

I was thinking about the handlebar mount squeezed on to my stabilizer. I've also seen people use a sticky mount on their riser.

P.S. If you bought a Gopro, this is worth it's weight in gold:
Wasabi Battery Charger with 2 batteries

2 batteries, a car charger, and a wall charger for the price of one GoPro battery.

Not trying to pick on you as I don't know you, but you get busted on all the time here for trying to get an elk. Why would you want to add another piece of gear that can potentially inhibit your success? I'm pulling for you guy's to get an elk this year, I just don't understand why you would want to add to the challenge. I race atv's and watch my buddies always messing around with those things and worrying about them being turned on. There's a reason I don't wear one when I'm racing because it's a needless distraction. Here's another scenario that could very well happen, you blow an opportunity on an elk, go back to the Gopro to see what happened and find out the dang thing didn't record due to it not being on, dirty lense, view blocked by something, etc. Have Campo carry it for you and film it.

Another suggestion is to have Campo carry it for you and film your hunt. That way you'll win the contest.

If he films his hunt, he can post it on archerytalk and all of us experts can tell him what he's been doing wrong. :D
