Still can’t find exactly what is in this primer pen and what is different about it through searching

I have had the issue also. But since I started scrubbing the shafts with a damp wash cloth with 20 mule team borax, then rising ( wiping ) clean, and a brand new jar of gorilla glue blue lid. I have not had an issue. Don’t use old glue, it won’t stick, for some reason. Seriously,

Just use the AAE recommendations on the Primer pen and be done with it. Once you use their products, you can't pull them off.

I’ve gotten AAE to stick disregarding the instructions… acetone the vane, scuff the shaft with a Brillo pad, clean the shaft with acetone, glue… still annoying.

I don’t know how AAE can continue to sell a product requiring so much time and effort (even using their steps) when competitor’s vanes can be glued with spit practically.

I say ditch AAE, fletch with another product, and do something more rewarding with your time/money. It’s a vane, there is nothing magical about AAE. Another vane with similar size and shape will produce equal results without the headache.

I don’t know why but that stupid primer pen works. I’ve tried denatured alcohol, acetone and rubbing alcohol. Nothing works as well as that stupid pen. On the bright side, I’ve had mine for 2 years now. Should last you a while if your not building arrows for people.

i agree completely. They don’t fly any better than anything else similar in size. People get all gah gah over these vanes and defensive over “following the directions.” Plus the argument that other vanes are too expensive but you spend extra money on an overpriced pen, wipes, special glue. Buy a good vane that doesn’t need extra prep and some gorilla glue at Walmart. Done. The flexible base and stiff vane on the Q2i is really tough to beat IMO. Bohning X vane is really nice too.

I hate to say it too, but the AAE pen thing works statistically better with my AAE vanes than Acetone + Qtips at keeping them on my shafts. The pen does have some special something or other in it that does some special something or other prep to the foot that makes it stick better. I don't know what, and I guess I finally don't care. I have two of the pens and I use them on my AAE vanes.

The shafts, OTOH, I have found that intensive, firm scrubbing with pure Acetone and I mean firm, hard scrubbing with my teeth fully clenched until my fingers are tired on each one, is absolutely required. On both carbons and aluminums, if I have any hope that all 3 will stay on the shaft until it breaks, wears out or goes into the woods.

The brand of cyanoacrylate you use, however, makes no difference. They will all perform the same. I use a gel type because they're a little easier to apply to the foot and stay in place as I work the clamp into the jig an onto the shaft, etc.

Yes, the occasional one still comes off or flies off, but statistically, that happens less when prepping the foot with the pen vs pure acetone or no prep at all.

Go figure. Is it a scam by AAE? Probably. Will I accept the scam and just let AAE bend me over? Probably. The AAE Max vanes work the best on my A/C/E's so it's still the best choice for me...

AAEs products just make it easier.

1. I like using their glue for any vanes, so no real issue there.
2. The primer pen takes 2-3 seconds per vane so I think people make too big of a deal about it.
3. Cleaning the shaft can be done with acetone, but the wipes seem to be less harsh on the carbon shafts and generally they don't need a ton of cleaning anyway. And you would do that with any vane.

All in all, I would just buy the AAE stuff. And it's easy to understand why people still deal with the extra step of the primer pen, because the material of the Max Stealth vanes are amazing.

Are Aae really thats much better than blazers.I have used blazers for years and the last few years ive been using loctite gel.Was thinking about trying aae but i see alot of issues, plus no one carries them local.
For accuracy? No. But there are some videos and a lot of personal accounts that the Max Stealths are quieter than the Blazers. You won't have issues if you use the primer pen. I use it with Maxi-bond glue and it works great.

Once my AAE’s are gone I’ll probably switch brands. I’ve had good luck getting them to stick using acetone or toluene. I’m not about to get upsold on a pen filled with magical solvent. My max stealth bases were so stiff I had to boil water and toss them in to soften up before fletching. I like the material though, the pro max have held up extremely well.

Both are great. If you need something slightly lower profile, the AAE vanes will help. Keep in mind the max material is heavier so it will slightly effect FOC. And the need for a primer pen is no big deal, just buy the genuine stuff from AAE
