I'm shooting 52lbs with a 584 grain arrow. It is slow but since i live in the concrete jungle, all my shots are under 30 easy. low pounds with heavy arrow makes shooting fun plus my bow is super quiet.

 

I agree with dbow. I shoot #61 (60 lb'er locked down) and I really like it with the heavy arrow. The bow has a whole different feel when you shoot in the 8+ grains per pound range. I hunt funnels, creek crossings, field entrances & exits, etc so I rarely shoot over 20 so it works great for me. Really even out to 30 the difference isn't as much as you would think. It's quiet, forgiving, fixed BH's aren't so tweaky, easy to tune and the penetration is awesome.

Definitely not as "productive" as the flatter shooting gear but for me if I can’t get em' close then it's just not worth taking the shot.....that's the challenge and fun for me.

 

im shooting 60lbs but just under 500, would see no problem at all with the heavy weight low poundage. quiet setup too.

 

Darton 60#s, 29" Easton #2216 Aluminum & 3 Blade Fixed 125gr Rocky Mountain fits in that catagory +.
Buffalo, Elk, Black Bear, Antelope, Caribou, Wild Hogs & many Whitetail have fallen to this combo for me.

 

Yep, 2315's swaged with glue on VPA 160 grain heads, just over 500 grains total weight. Quiet and forgiving, penetration like a runaway train.

 

My combination this year is going to be a 60 pound draw, 30 inch draw length, 29 inch Easton XX78 Super Slam 2315 arrows with four inch plastic vanes, and 125 grain fixed 3-blade VPA broadheads. I think this is going to be a very quiet, bone penetrating deadly combo for whitetails at less than thirty yards. Anybody have an idea what my arrow and head combination would weigh?

 

I'm going to make the drop to 60 lbs. I've always shot 70 and for whitetails these days, seems like overkill.

Bow will be a PSE Evo at 29''/60 lb limbs maxed out. Arrow will be a Black Eagle Rampage .300 with 50 or 75 grain brass HIT and 100 grain Slick Trick Mags. Arrow weight between 425-450. I bet the arrow will retain decent speed and penetrate excellent.

 

My arrow weight will be pretty close to yours, with 125 grain ST Mags my ACC Pro Hunters weigh about 430 grains. But I am kinda thinking of going to an arrow closer to 500 grains and higher FOC. Your FOC should be pretty good with them brass inserts.

 

Thinking my xx75 2413's will be close to 500. depends on what grain broadhead im gonna shoot. i love slinging logs! quiet and tons of penetration. as others have said, most of my shots are within 30 so a heavier arrow isnt going to set me back.

 

I'm close, 465gr. out of a 60# Omen Pro. If I had a draw length longer than my 27", I'd up the weight. It worked on 4 big game animals last year including a huge bodied bull elk at 45 yards.

Good read BUT all was done out of a 65 pound bow. Would a less heavy bow make a difference? If i followed his plan, i'd be shooting a 335 grain arrow? Doesn't make sense.

 

I shot XX75's coming in at around 550 for quite a while at 60 lbs. I never had a problem with penetration. I'm sure you won't either.

 

Sometimes I shoot my 500gr arrows out of my 60lb bow. They are fine out to 60.

 

If you shoot the right bow you can shoot 60 and get the same power as a 70 pounder. I have a Darton DS3800 @ 62lbs and it shoots the same speed as my 2010 Elite gt 500 that is set at 75.8lbs. The darton has a 6" brace height but it shoots better than the gt500 hands down, its quieter, more forgiving, draw cycle is as good but hard to say with a 13lbs difference, and has less hand shock. The only thing the elite has over the darton is fit and finish. I am not shooting a 500+ grain arrow but close, using a 465 gr arrow and I am getting 270fps out of the 62 pound darton at 28" draw.

 

Was the Darton priced lower than the Gt. I thought i heard that Darton was out of biz...

 

I would love to be able to do a test like this with my bow too. Sounds like a lot of fun. I've actually researched making ballistic gel, but it seems kinda spendy right now. I agree, first and foremost the best penetrating arrow will be the one that flys the best out of your bow, however i would really like to see a comparison between two equal spined arrows one being carbon/ lighter and the other alum/ heavier all done with the same 160 2 blade zwicky. cool thread...

 

Mathews Outback @58lbs, 28" draw, 525 grain arrow, 230 fps. My Hoyt UltraTec1000 at 61, 27.5" and same arrow is 232. Stable, forgiving, and relatively quiet.

One thing I've observed on the TV bowhunting shows---lots of shots in the sweet spot with the deer running away with half or more of the shaft hanging out the entry side. Can't say why--light arrow, mechanicals, punch-cutting instead of cut-on-contact BH, too light DW? All I know is that I get complete penetration on deer and feral hogs 95% of the time-and that suits me just fine.

60# Z28 shooting around 430g. Going heavier this year. Speed is over rated.

 

I am shooting a 60# bow with 510 gr FMJ.....Have not had a problem.....the still stick in the dirt 6+ inches after passthru....even after hitting shoulder

 

I shoot fixed blade 475ish Beman ICSs out of a 60# Diamond. Where I hunt shots under 20 are the norm. Set up works well for me. Arrows are probably only going 230fps, but so far I haven't had any penetration issues. Arrows do start dropping pretty quick after 40 yrds or so. But like everyone said, bow is very quiet.

 

I am going to bring this thread back up ttt, I am thinking about building some arrows around 500 grains or over 600 grains with high FOC. Just wanting to see what more people are shooting in the "heavy and slow" category.

 

Is was shooting some around 550 grain xx75s for a while then went to FMJs at about 460. Then went to Beman ICS Hunters at around 380. Now shooting bloodlines at about 410. I think 410 gives me my best performance.

These are coming out of a Carbon Element RKT at 61# 28.5" draw

 

pse axe 6, 60 lbs, 533 grains with my helix 155 grain head, and 503 grains with my 125 gravedigger, just traded this bow so hopefully my other bow will shoot these well too.

 

I built a few 650 grain arrows, shooting them at 60lbs they are amazingly quiet, have yet to hunt with them . but the arrow drop at 40 was not too bad.

my hunting arrows are 435 grains.

 

Currently im shooting easton fmj 340"s im shooting 62lbs with my Hoyt Axius Ultra. my arrow weight is 480 -485 and they fly great just a little slow

 

you need to specify draw length, a 30 inch draw at 60 lbs is as powerful as 28 inch at 70 lbs.
