I have a bowtech that i modified. It has 50lb limbs with taller pivots, so it pulls about 53- 54lbs. arrows are 420 gr. and very quite.
My 07 bull was a passthrough, and my 08 bull was shot at 32 yards and was quartering away at an extreme angle. My arrow went through part of his hind quarter, through guts, both lungs and bottomed out in his front shoulder!! He only went 45 yds and piled up.
This yr i'm shooting a admiral at 60lb, but it may get backed down, so we'll see. 50lb is plenty for anything in the states, plus you can hold it at full draw for a very long time!!!........kurt
I shot a buffalo few years ago with a 57# martin cougar 3. 30" beman ics hunter (around 450 gr I think). Pass threw at 20 yards. The new bows have plenty of energy at 50 pounds to kill almost anything. Shot placement and scary sharp broadheads are the most important thing.
Also I hunt with two 16 year olds sometime who shoot 50lbs. will kill anything and is 100X better for your shoulder in the long run I've decided to shoot 60lb. this year. Listened to too many elders telling me they wish they never shot 70lb so they could still be bow hunting.
I took a whitetail with my 45# longbow last year and one with a 50# recurve this past season. one was a pass through and one held up at the fletchings at the opposite side.
All my bows for the past six years have been 50 to 55 pounds. No problem. In 2007 I shot a 226 lb dressed buck at 30 yards and passed through. But I try to stick with a cut on contact head or cam action mechanical. I think todays bows are way to powerful to worry about the weight. And a smooth effortless draw is my idea of stealthy.
wife took a 90# hog at 36lb with a 22" draw.. nearly shoot completley through it... striker blade super sharp... stay with a cut on contact head, stay happy
I have a Martin Bengal set at 52 pounds for late season hunting when its cold. I had trouble drawing my 60# Vectrix XL last fall when it got cold. Bad shoulders. I don't know what kind of speed I'm getting but I'm sure it is plenty to do the job.
Sounds good everyone! I'm going to buy a 40-50 lb. bow for hunting this season..I'm only 40, and in great shape, but i love to shoot every day in the yard. With my 60 lb., i find my shoulder getting sore after my second session..I've also been blessed with a 30 in. draw length, so that'll keep up the speed and k.e with the 50 lb. bow..Can't wait! Thanks!
When I set up for Turkeys I am 50 or under incase I have to hold for a while
