I am thinking of making my own arrows. If I were to get a Bitz fletching jig, would I be best of with a straight or a helical model?

I know I can add another clamp later, but which one should I start out with.

you'll probably get a bunch of different answers but from my understanding and what ive been doing is testing the natural rotation of the arrow (bare shaft) and once i figured that out i bought the appropriate clamp. My bow had a natural clockwise rotation so i bought right helical clamp. Going to mess around with a straight clamp on my next arrow build though. Hope this helps

My take is that for 95% of the shots that you would take it doesn't really matter, and in particular if you are shooting with a release you get a lot less flex in the arrow shaft and a far more stable shot from shot to shot. So for the release shooter arrow spin isn't as critical as it used to be for the more traditional release methods. Recurve shooters and finger shooters really benefit and almost require arrow spin to stabilize the arrows in flight. I'm a finger shooter so I use Helical and although it may not be necessary for a release shooter I would recommend that you use helical just for the improved stability. The only detriment to helical fletchings is that it may increase the arrows arch on longer shots. 70, 80 100 yards. those are typically distances that you wouldn't want to make a habit of shooting anyway so I'm int the "why wouldn't you shoot helical" camp.

I would also recommend straight for starting out. Doing like Blazers with a lot of twist can be tricky to get all of the foot glued down. I still like straight the best with blazers, I just put some angle to them. I shoot fixed blade BH's and the group well.

I would like to tune in because I am a newbie to fletching and observe some pretty sharp mines sharing their wisdom. I have picked up a crossbow due to a back injury and surgery. I'm considering the Bitzenburger Jig. I'm shooting an Assassin 360, which when dampened, delivers about 350 FPS. My broad heads will initially be fixed. How much right or left helical will perform best in my set-up?
