Both Cabelas ("The World's Foremost Outfitter") and Bass Pro ("The World's leading Supplier of Premium Outdoor Gear") are doing fine, and are both expanding.

As has been mentioned, Bass Pro is privately owned, while Cabelas is public, so nobody outside of Bass Pro head office really knows how BP is doing relative to Cabelas.

Some stores are doing very well, some are not - location, location, location :), but overall, both chains are making tons of money and continually expanding.

I may be wrong, I have never heard of a single Cabelas or Bass Pro location closing down for lack of business.

Their only current serious problem is the possibility of expanding past their supply chain. It's great to open dozens of new stores every year, but manufacturers have to have the production capacity to fill these stores.

Don't wait to the last minute to get your hunting supplies, people - stuff does run out of stock and they don't want to overstock and have to keep last year's models of everything around for another year and then have to discount it.

HAHA!

Whats with peeps dragging these old threads to the top for? Getting bored and need a argument?

Trophy room thread and now this one..LOL!

cabelas crushes bass pro here in michigan theres no way bass pro could even stand a chance with cabelas

Cabelas in Dundee Michigan is currently in the process of firing all of thier store managers except three. This is what a good employer they are. They called all of thier management team into a meeting to inform them that as of April 25th they no longer have a job. All managers must reapply for the job that they currently have. Cabelas is going to rehire 1/3 of the managers back. If Cabelas offers a manager his/her job back and they do not take it Cabelas is going to deny them unemployement. Now for the other 2/3 of the managers who do not get a job offer back Cabelas is going to give them 1 weeks severence pay for every year of service. I worked for Cabelas in Dundee for 6 years. For the first two years the job was not bad Because Dick, mary, and Jim still had control of it. As soon as the store went public on the stock market it flat out sucked. One week after it went public Cabelas had its first ever layoff in 40 years of business. One year latter Cabelas had its next layoff. Cabelas is only interested in part time employees which they do not have to pay any type money of benifits. If you work at Cabelas full time you are in constant fear that you will lose your job daily. If the general public only knew how lousy of a retailer Cabelas is to work for or how they treat thier staff absolutely no one would shop thier. I personally have been privliged to have some crappy jobs over the years. I mean this only because that I am damm lucky in this economy to simply have a job. All that I have to say is that of all the crappy jobs Cabelas takes the cake.

Isn't this how it is everywhere. I contract at a major retail corporation and they are laying people off and off shoring a lot of the work. It's this way everywhere. And, is only going to get worse.

As for Gander Mountain owning Cabelas. That is BS. I see a person high up in the Gander corporation once in a while and we were just talking about how they are trying to differentiate themselves from Cabelas.

Ditto

Are you talking about just 1 location or all of them? I havn't heard anything like it....I would expect that Bass Pro couldn't compete with Cabelas if anything.
At least here in PA there is NO WAY IN HECK that Bass Pro could out do Cabelas. The folks in the Harrisburg Bass Pro Have to take a course in local geography so they know how to give people directions to get to the stores in the area that actually have the items you looking for.
