Colorado GMU 11 for elk

Looking at my first Colorado elk hunt after no success in Utah a couple of times. Studied the CDOW info and I have it narrowed down to a couple of units and wanted to ask about on the ground knowledge. I will ask about GMU 11 first. I am looking at the Windy Gulch WSA area and Danforth Hills.

What kind of ATV pressure is around those areas?

Is the terrain good for glassing or more of a "run and gun" area?

Is there anyone in the area that could be hired to pack out with horses if needed?

Thanks in advance.

You should call the division of wildlife in Meeker. I know that most of the land in that unit is private but they were mentioning the Danforth Hills area as a place to go. They should also know about outfitters that can be hired to pack out game. Run Google Earth over the area. You'll see lots of steep draws with limited access. I think it is more shrubs and prairie than forest so I would think visibility will be spotty.

I doubt you'd need anyone to pack out for you. The average recreational days/elk harvested there last year was 40...the season is only 30 days.

Tough unit for elk. Lots of private in and around the best elk habitat and lots of access and roads around the public land.

Thanks guys. Maybe I will have to re-access my choices. In Utah I had a guy help me out but picking an area all on my own may be out of my comfort zone.

Unit 11 has a lot of public land. Its where I rifle hunt. Never been to Danforth hills, usually north of there near wapiti peak, just west and hunt sagebrush draw. Big valley with Forrest to the west. Sagebrush, grass Ans spotty Forrest to the east. I bet if you set up in the gulch at a crossing it would be a great place for archery. Pm me and I can tell you exactly where I am talking about.

11 is a far better antelope unit than an elk unit. Locate where the water is and intercept the path where the terrain breaks and you might just do some good.

I've hunted it a bit with rifle. It seems a better unit for later seasons, like November when they've been pushed down from the higher areas. Lots of scrub oak and very poor visibility in the area I was in. There was a lot of deer there, and a few lions.
