Custom grip to shorten draw length

I just want to know. If for some reason, you can't or don't want to shorten a bow DL via mods/cams... can you decrease DL (or would it be felt DL) by putting on a custom grip that thickens the back strap of a bow's handle?

I've handled a friend's bow that he made a nice custom, form-fitting grip for, and it struck me that I could possible push add 1/4" to the backstrap on a bow that's slightly long.

I'm guessing this would be a fine-tuning operation to take a 31.5 or 32" down 1/2 to 3/4 in felt draw.

I'm a big guy, so I don't think it would screw me up for ergonomics, etc.

I won't go the other way (make a shorter draw fit by adding loop length) as I've been there, done that, and it's not for me.

The answer to your question is yes.If you put a 1/2 inch thick piece on the back of your riser,it will push the bow out 1/2 inch which would have the affect of makeing your draw 1/2 inch shorter.

Actually it has the effect of giving you a longer draw length. I draw 28" on my Elite bow with sideplates. With a 1 piece grip, I can draw 28 1/2".

The reason you can go to 28 1/2 is because the grip had the effect of shotening your draw allowing you to go 1/2 longer!His question was will a thicker grip have the effect of shortening a bow that is a little long of a draw and the answer is yes!

It would also make it seem like it had a shorter brace height, and arm contact could become an issue !

I shoot a 26.5 Equalizer and am 26 inch draw because I have the one piece grip, but it has never changed the way the bow acts with regards to arm contact. It "fits" me as well as my 26 inch Equalizer.

Carphunter, it's definitely the way I'd go from now on!

I guess it would depend on how much you added to the grip ?

The more you add to the grip the less distance there is going to be between the string and the grip, so eventually, if you add enough to the grip you will get contact.

Unfortunately you dont gain any extra speed, because the string is still the same distance from the riser, but if you add enough to the grip it will cause problems eventually ! :darkbeer:

I know this won't affect bow speed because true DL never changes with this.

I shoot relatively straight bow arm... so I was thinking that since bow hand will never move back towards my anchor, the grip will push me out whatever the new grip thickness is, and will bring my draw hand forward...giving me a little bit of shortening.

I know I can't do this a ton... but I'm basically checking into this in case I buy a 31 1/2 bow, and find I'm actually more comfortable closer to 31. Without buying different cams... I was just checking if I could eek a tiny bit of shortening out with grip. I know you do a very small amount with string setup too.

Put a "Death Grip" on it and it will decrease draw length. You will keep the speed, shoot more accurately, and your bow will be 100% torque free.
