I am a fan of the Moultries. Running 4 of the 30 gallon drums with the pro spinners. Only thing I would recommend would be to use some caulk or gasket sealer around the bar running through the barrel. Do this and you will be good to go.

 

I usually make my own. $20 drum from a local brewery, $40 Game Winner feeder head including external mini funnel, $10 internal funnel, $6 6v battery, and then price changes depending if you want to tripod it or winch it. The hogs here in Florida have learned they knock over tripods to have the feeder on the ground so I personally use the Viking Solution Kwik Hoist (thing is pretty sweet for the price) which is $80 shipped. By doing this though you need to attach eyelits or a bar and chain to the barrel. Call it another $20 in supplies. At $175, I have a 55 gallon steel drum that runs like a dream, a single person can winch the barrel up and down with over 250 lbs of corn in it and it lasts a long time. Only real plastic part on it is the mini funnel that leads to the rotating feeder head plate. Everything else is metal.

 

I hear great things about the Buck Boss if you do not have bears around. I'm in NJ and we have a ton of bears so it would be knocked down and probably destroyed in a few days. Everyone around here uses the Moultrie drums with pro spinners....Probably what i'm going to buy as well

Depends...........If you have bears you want the spinner head so you can hang it from a tree and avoid the bears and make it more difficult for squirrels to eat from. On the other hand, the gravity feeder has no moving parts so there is nothing that can break or really get clogged up.

 

Anything like that is going to get mixed reviews, and a lot of the negative reviews are from dumbasses who are too stupid to know how to assemble or operate the things, and blame it on the manufacturer. People are also more prone to leave a review of a negative experience than a positive one, so it’s going to be skewed, anyway. Moultrie feeders are fine.

So I purchased 2 Moultrie feeders. One being the pro model and the other being the elite. I purchased the elite model from a private sell and the guy said he never used it and it appeared to be the case based on the fact it looks brand new. However I set it up the other day and upon trying to test it , the spinner with spin. The timer shows power and allows you to change settings , but the spinner plate won’t spin in test mode. What gives ?

The Moultrie pro feeders are nothing like they use to be. Quality is not as good as I am replacing at least one every year. I still have some from 10 years ago that won't die. I just recently used a wild game innovation feeder and I like it better I think. One thing I like about the WGI is the battery attachment is a terminal end (slide on kind). The Moultrie is a gator clip, not as sturdy. Other thing is it is a metal housing so squirrels can't chew on it. I have had several Moultrie get chewed on till there was a joke and then water gets in and ruins the feeder.

i would get the moultrie pro magnum timers they are metal, they have a lifetime warranty. i have 17 feeders running right now, and have been using feeders in food plots for years.
we have trouble with 1 or 2 a year and send them back (timer) and they send us a brand new one. i start running them in July, so they are out there for awhile.
i just always have a extra one on hand to swap out if needed. i have tried several others over the years, but i like the moultrie because of the warranty.

 

I have a feeder from Academy Sports, Game Winner brand i think, and i would highly recommend it. If you wait until this winter to buy you can usually find them half off or more.

 

Looking to purchase a couple feeders this year. Was researching Moultrie feeders and they seem to get mixed reviews ? Can anyone offer some insight or recommend a certain one ? I’ve read reviews on the wild game brand and those seem to be less than favorable. Any others out there ? Trying so stay in the $100 - $150 range per feeder.

i know its a bit late ha but since i was doing research i came across this forum. for future people that come across this thread, i ended up going with a moultrie graivty tripod feeder based off the recommendations in this thread and of this deer feeder review i found : Nature's Glade Deer Feeders

arrived yesterday, easy setup would always recommend moultrie

 

My experience in NC and KY bigger deer don’t really come to spin feeders. I think they’re obnoxious to boot, seen plenty of deer take off like a bat outa hell when feeder goes off.

Had much better luck with gravity feeders. Have a 600 lb boss buck. Have had plenty of good bucks eat out of it. Hard to get a decent buck even around a spin feeder. YMMV.

 

I used to have gravity feeders. They were fantastic in til the herd started growing and I was filling 300 lbs of corn every 4 days! I had 3 of these so imagine the cost! I too was worried about automatic spinner feeders and scaring the big guys away. It took only about 3 weeks and those big bucks hear it going off and they know it’s dinner time now. My worries we’re in vain. They have no fear of them and even hit the one out in the open in daylight. I use all automatic feeders now. I use Moultries and hang them between trees with a winch. I have bears otherwise I would just use the tripod. The spinner sound is like a dinner bell. At least this is my experience.
