Finally got my DIY deer hoist project done. Thought I’d share with everyone. Had to cut access to the garage attic. Added header boards and framed it with some 1x4’s. The hanger is three scrap 2x6’s I zipped together with deck screws that I can lay across the trusses. I bought a 500lb rated eye bolt from TSC along with a heavy duty 1000lb clip and a 1ton chain hoist to make hoisting easy peezy.

Cost:
$10 for eye bolt and clip
$6 for framing lumber
$80 for 1ton chain hoist

About $100 total

I considered an electric hoist, but then would have to worry about a power supply.

I also wanted to be able to just grab the whole setup and take it upto deer camp with me. The chain hoist is probably more practical for those reasons.

At some point I may splice into the circuit for the garage and hookup another outlet for power close to the access but the only difference imo between this and the electric hoist is this takes a little bit longer to hang a deer :D

Either way it works great!

Very nice! I mounted a boat winch to my garage wall and a pulley up above. I can back my truck under where the pulley is, hook up the gambrel, and then just hoist the deer up. Once up above the ceiling joists (my garage interior is not finished like yours), I lift the gambrel just high enough so I can slide a steel pipe through the gambrel and across the joists. I must use a ladder to do that. That way I can relieve the tension on the winch and cable. When I want to take the deer down I just hook the cable back up to the gambrel and lift it an inch so I can pull the pipe out.
