Dogs running deer while hunting

So I went out this morning for opening day and I walked on top of a ridge getting close to where deer are bedding down (was raining so very stealthy) when I decided to sit for awhile. About 20 mins after I sat down I heard dogs start barking I figured maybe they were running rabbits or something little did I know they were running a deer. They crossed the ridge in front of me maybe about 50 yard to my front an kept moving only a few mins later they started turning back. I knew that deer would cross near me somewhere and sure enough about 20 yards downhill it came around and stood perfect broadside only there was a small pine tree in the way so I couldn't get the shot and off it ran being chased by dogs. So my question is in my state dog hunting for deer is illegal but they weren't my dogs so if I shot the deer would that be breaking the law???

If they are not your dogs you can kill the deer without breaking the law. In Missouri it is against the law to run deer with dogs, but it is agaist the law to kill the dogs the dogs are someones property! I have a buddy that knows for sure, he shot two dogs running deer on his farm and had to pay a 1,000 bucks a peice for them!

I hate the practice of running dogs and can't stand the people who run them for deer. I do nto think it is considered hunting and the people who do it are not considered hunters in my book. I would shoot every dog that came on my property that I could if it were legal.

Classic right there. Someone that doesn't hunt the way you think they should are not real hunters? Lol. You hate people who hunt with dogs , even though it's legal in some states. Really? Have you ever hunted anything , including rabbits squirrels fowl or pheasant with dogs? Why don't you get off your high horse and holier than thou attitude. All people who go into the field and attempt to harvest game animals in a legal manner ARE HUNTERS! I don't like dogs running around messing up my hunt no more than the next fellow hunter , but if that is the way some prefer to hunt , then that's their right. It is what it is. As far as shooting a dog , I personally never would unless it posed a threat. To the op. Are the dogs just someone's pets or are they being put out to actually hunt with. If the latter is the case then you should contact a game warden. If it's just some residents pets , then see if you can locate the owners and ask them to pen them up or keep them out of your hunting area. If they are wild and have no collars , then do what you feel is right.

Hey, shoot the deer. Not everyone has the commitment that bowhunters do. But then again training and keeping deer dogs is a commitment in itself. I grew up around it and when u have a shotgun in your hands, dogs on the trail is music to your ears. Of course, u have to realize when gun season starts, bow season is OVER.

I grew up hunting deer with dogs! I love it, killed my first deer ahead of dogs! People who have never been on a true deer hunt with dogs need to come to SC and try it! I know several people who give true dog hunters a bad name, but it is harder to kill a nice buck ahead of a pack of dogs than it is shooting one standing broadside with a bow! I know I bow hunt harder than anyone I know! Not trying to push anybody's button just my two cents on the subject! Happy hunting too all!

i would shoot the dogs and not say anything . I sat out for 2 hours last january for deer only to have a beagle run the deer off .I took about a 350 yard shoot at the dog running (missed him by about 2 feet) I seen him chasing the deer through the neighbors farm about 3/4 of a mile away. 3 s's shoot them shovel them and shut up.

I normally don't have a problem with anything anyone says on here but you sir are a horrible person. You have a problem with the dog confront the owner and teach him a thing or two. It isn't the dogs fault. You have no idea the circumstance as to how that dog got out. Suppose some child accidentally left the door open and you just shot his dog. Scum..

I don't care for dogs being around while I'm in a treestand at all just like most everybody. But I'm certainly not gonna shoot another man's dog. Besides those dogs almost ran a deer right in your lap for an easy shot. I killed a P&Y ten point a few years back that was being pushed by 3 small dogs. They were licking blood off the deer by the time I got to him.

Here we go again. This same debate comes up every year and never ends well. Why can't we all just get along? Just b/c somebody else doesn't agree with a hunting style/practice that is legal why is it necessary to jump all over them and claim its not really hunting?

I do not like hunting a bait pile, some don't like hunting from a stand/ground blind, others think riding around looking an animal from a vehicle and stalking it isn't hunting. Guess what, they are all legal (in most states), we are all after the same goal of killing the animal in the most humane way possible, and we are bow hunting. Just b/c you don't like it doesn't take away from the accomplishments of the person who killed the deer. If you don't agree with a certain practice, then by god don't hunt that way!!!! Hunt the way you like to hunt and move on.

Anyone who shoots a dog on sight is a D-bag. Try to locate the owner. How would you feel if your dog accidentally got out and someone shot it? I know I would be a very unhappy individual. It's not the dogs fault he is following his instincts.

i just don't see how someone can find running deer with dogs sporting at all[/QUOTE

Just as much sport as running rabbits, treeing *****, or any of that sort of stuff. Its just a different style of hunting. Some people like some don't others dont care but I won't pass judgement on how anyone celebrates the outdoors so long that its legal.

I have some neighbors that have several pit bulls. It never fails I seen them close to my stand. The same dogs even showed some aggression to my mom and my sisters kids once. They got aggressive with me one evening when I was a just a couple feet up in my climber on my way up. I got down and threw a stick at them and they left. I could have shot them numerous times but just didn't / cant. They have even attacked a cow of mine when the cow got through the fence onto their property. I still can't shoot someone's dog to kill em. My dad has fired his shotgun in their direction to scare them off when they came behind his house.

Shooting a random dog that chased a deer on your property is just rotten.
My 85 lb German shep is 7yrs old. The other day I was letting him out to do his business. He saw a doe across the street and I could not hold him. He took off after her. He pissed me off beyond belief. But if someone shot him for chasing that doe.....

Shooting an aggressive dog is another story.

Did you guys on here read his post, evidently you didn't...

OP are you Bowhunting or Rifle hunting? if not this is a bowhunting site..

You other guys on here, he asked , where he hunts, its illegal to use dogs.....So if he shot a deer, is it illegal, since the dogs were chasing the deer, and the dogs were not his...

Or am i missing something here?

And if i saw someone mistreating a dog, or kill a dog for running deer, i would turn them into the LAW...

Yeah....I'm too much of a dog lover. There's no way I could shoot a dog, unless I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt it was running wild, aggressive, or feral. Sometimes dogs get loose and run. Its in their nature. Whether its little Timmy's pet that got out once, or a bum of a neighbor that doesn't keep his dogs under control - its the owner's fault, not the dog's. I've had issues with neighbor's dogs before and I've used a paintball gun to establish some boundaries, but I could not/would not kill a dog unless it was attacking me. Its frustrating to have a hunt ruined, but I certainly don't think its worth the trouble it would cause. If some antlers mean that much to you, its time to reassess your priorities as a person...

I have to agree with CJ here. Dog running is very popular where I live. I grew up in a dog running club and I'm very grateful for the memories I have with my father during those years! However he also got me into still hunting. Be it a bow, black powder or shotgun and that is just where my heart lies when it comes to hunting. Yes I have had ALOT of hunts ruined by someones dogs. I have had plenty of oppurtunities to take a dog out, but it just isn't worth it to me. My heart would never be the same if I did. The dog is only doing what it knows to do. Right or Wrong I'm not crossing the line by killing an animal just because I'm frustrated.
