GA hunting Late Season Questions

Hey guys, GA has been unusually warm this season, especially during rut. I've had great success this year and was hoping to continue into the late season. Anyone have any idea of how this new cold weather could get deer moving and any strategies to get deer within range for late season hunting? I think this newly cold weather may even kick in a "Post-Rut" Rut that will get those bucks moving. Atleast that's what I hope for!

I've had a good year, thanks to a few lucky hunts, but overall this season has been lackluster for me. I do a little hunting in Cartersville and the rest of it down around Dublin, off of hwy 16. I don't know what your land looks like, but I know my land in Cartersville is literally blanketed with acorns, which makes the deer hard to figure out. Late season is all about keying in on a preferred food source, but if you have acorns like I do it'll be tough.

Not sure of your age, but I'm in your area (KSU) a few days a week, always nice to see someone close to home on here

I usually hunt a good food source late in the season...especially food plots, the deer really start piling into mine late in the season which makes for a doe shooting frenzy. The bucks tend to hang in the thickets till after dark to appear in the field.

That has been my experience and my camera findings in years past. In 24 years of deer hunting in GA, I have never killed a good buck after Thanksgiving. Back when I rifle hunted only I would kill some little bucks in late season but that was a long time ago. The big mature deer find a good hiding spot and stay there.

Had a buddy hunt this evening in Greene Co. and heard a Buck running 2 doe right by his stand at dark. Couldn't see the buck's size, but I think this cold weather has started the 2nd rut. He also found several new scrapes on the property. Good luck! I stilll think GA is one of the hardest states to hunt whitetail.

I've not seen alot of deer hanging around my place (house) like in the past, they would always tease me by hanging around in my backyard moving from their bending area to their food source and water. Another thing is every year atleast 2 or 3 would get whacked on the highway by my house but not a one this year, so I'm not sure what the heck is going on. I did see deer early in the season but I let them walk because they had fawns with them, but the past 2 or 3 weeks I've not seen a deer but I've heard plenty of gun shot's.

We are getting some new land this next year because they literally took every tree except the ones you can shake with your hand. But I really want to get into turkey hunting, just hadn't had the time or knows anyone that I can learn from. Don't like going out and winging it because it seems like a waste of time. I know that's how a lot of ya'll learned but just not my style.. Really hoping that the bucks start a 2nd rut bc of the cold. Going out this Sunday after the LSU/UGA game. Being I'm from South Louisiana I'm sure you can guess who I'll be routing for. Lets GEAUX kill some biggins in GA!

Timbawolf: I am from Dublin and that where my parents place is I hunt. North side of the county off 441 about 5 miles before getting into Wilkinson County. I might need to get up with you sometime and shoot that obsession. Also, my brother was at KSU until he graduated last year. He was a KE there. Good luck to everyone...Georgia has produced some studs this year!

Bowman, I completely understand, that would be frustrating, if you have a place and want someone to show you a little and learn a lot with you, shoot me a message, I've killed 5 birds in my 3 years turkey hunting, so I have a ton of learning to do, but love every second I'm out there. And I'd like to think that people at KSU could at least spell G-O correctly haha

SSmith6, I'd be more than happy to do that, I hunt off of 338 (exit 42), I should have a 2012 Obsession to go with my SS in the next few weeks, you're more than welcome to shoot one or both of them when I'm down that way

I'm in Cartersville as well and if it was not for some very successful trips to IL I would not have much to talk about this year as far as GA hunting goes. Only killed 1 doe and bear this season here in GA and deer movement has been lackluster to say the least. We are not even seeing any deer driving around like we normally do as well. Gonna try and hunt some this weekend and hope there is some 2nd rut activity but not looking good. So many acorns on the ground with very little deer sign, just does not seem right?
