Iowa Hog Hunt? Seriously?

OK I was talking to a Wal-mart sporting goods employee here in central IA a few weeks ago and he told me that there are feral hogs in southern IA and that he is going on a hunt in March or May I don't remember. He said that all you gotta do is contact the IA DNR and they will tell you where they have been spotted and even help set you up on them!

Is anybody buying this? I'd love to go knock a few out but I have my doubts that there is any truth to this.

So do you guys know if this may be true....if so I'm headed south this spring!

I wouldnt doubt that story.

Hogs are like the plaque, you dont want them no mater how much you think you do........alot of dnr techs HATE them because they destroy, dove fields, food plots and whatever else the techs may have worked hard to plant on public ground.

If thats the case they may very well tale people where the hogs are. We have a place around here like that.

Actually that was the referance the Wal-Mart guy gave. But I think I'm gonna give them (DNR) a call and see if I can find anything out. I would assume they would like to keep them out of IA as well as landowners. Just wondering if there was any truth to this Wal-Mart guys story.

Sounds like they may be moving into our state.

I remember the The DNR had a press release out a year or to ago asking hunters to immediately report any hog sightings. They acknowledged that there were very few hogs in the state. They went so far as to say if you had the right fire arm go ahead and kill it but if all you had was bird shot in a shot gun it would be better to leave them be and call your local CO asap.

I travel to Tx. & Ok. 2-3 times a year in the off season to Bowhunt them. It's a great time BUT we do not want them in the midwest.
They can really destroy everything n a very short time. I'll keep driving 13-14 hours one way to hunt them & hope they don't get into my state.
There are 2 places I know of (preserves) that have hog hunting (fenced) 1 is near Tama called North Star & the other is in N.E. Ia., Monona called Scenic View.
I've killed 16 in Tx & Ok & going again in June to meet up with friends from other places & Bowhunt them for 3 days. Fun to hunt but trust me, we don't want them in our Deer woods.

There is a guy at a Wally World I go into from time to time. I can't remember if it's the Altoona or SE 14th store. I do remember he has a nearly toothless grin and greasy hair. Kinda smells like cabbage too. Anyway...He mentions feral hogs every time I'm there. If that's the dude, I don't think I would trust his information.

Sorry long read

I called the IA DNR and they referred me to the Wildlife Biologist of Southeastern IA, so I called them.
I was told that there was a case of wild Russian bores being let loose in the wild 4 or 5 years ago for the purpose of hunting by a resident of that part of the state. Well they eventually grew in population then contracted a disease that spread into a local’s hog facility and his herd had to be put down. This in turn caused an uproar and so hunters and just about anybody that owned a gun, bow or club set out to destroy them…..according to the biologist I talked to, they got the job done.

So….no hogs in Southeastern IA. He said there may actually be some in Southwestern IA but I’d be better of going on-line to the Missouri Department of Conversation http://mdc.mo.gov/hunting-trapping/regulations/feral-hog-regulations and that they have a map on their site showing what counties have hogs. I couldn’t find the map.
So that’s good news….no hogs in IA, just giant deer.

for the last 5 years a few of us in Maine here have been traveling to Texas and Florida to bowhunt hogs.

It would be great if they spread into the mid west, that way, we wouldn't have to travel so far...............................
