Man Kung Crossbow (my thoughts)

I posted this on another crossbow forum and thought I should post it here also.

So I read about a company called Man Kung that makes inexpensive crossbows on a couple different sites. I decided I would take a chance and order one to see how well it was constructed. So far, I am really impressed with the quality of this crossbow after opening the box. I still haven't put it together but as a whole the thing is built very solid. It has a composite stock and a nice aluminum rail (not cheap cast junk) and so far seems very well built. I am not saying I know much about crossbows, because I don't but for $80 this thing is really above and beyond what I was expecting. I also emailed the manufacturer to ask a question about arrow sizes, I got a response no joke within 5 minutes! Wow! Another shock to me. So the only questionable thing I can say so far is the two arrows that come with it are pretty small they are around 14" so I will be ordering some longer ones for a little more weight. I can't wait to get it set up and do some target shooting with it. Enough of me rambling on... here are some pictures:

Here is the place I bought it. I have emailed back and forth with the crossbowstore and they are very nice people to deal with. It is normally $89 but if you type the word halloween in the code section when you are checking out it will take 15% off your order.

Here is the link to the store: http://www.thecrossbowstore.com/

Here is the direct link to the crossbow I bought: http://www.thecrossbowstore.com/150-lbs-Plastic-Stock-Hunting-Crossbow-with-2-Arro-p/mk-150a3b.htm

Bowtech should ... steal their customer service manager. LOL The bow looks fairly stout from a distance ... at least the stock does.

I am waiting on some things to get shipped to me (new arrows, scope etc...) As soon as they all get here and I get the crossbow setup I will let everyone know how it performs. I will include lots of pictures and maybe some video:thumb:

Not that this has anything to do with the quality of my Man Kung Crossbow, but I read something interesting earlier today. I read that Man Kung builds crossbows for other companies, and one that was brought up was PSE. The PSE Viper Copperhead. This does not shock me at all, I just found it interesting.

I was curious to see just how alike the crossbows looked. There were a couple of Man Kung models that looked similar, here are the pictures:

well, i'm assuming that the man kung you bought is just some thing to play with. the xbows on there site that have a 150# draw and do 250fps are not some thing you want to replace a hoyt with. those are the kind of bows that can blow up in your face. wicked ridge has just came out with some nice bows that sell for $400 to $600 bucks. 10 pt makes them and 10 pt is a first class outfit. these days there are all kinds of options with xbows. you may end up being a xbow junkie like the rest of us.

Haha yea this is strictly going to be a target crossbow for me. Although I have read numerous successful hunting stories of people using the 150# PSE shown above which is basically a Man Kung and other 150# crossbows. 250fps has no problem killing game. So in reality it would do just fine to use for hunting. But like I said for me, I am going to be enjoying target with it. Also I am not worried about it blowing up. You can tell just by looking at it that it isn't built like a toy. Besides I don't think I can even recount the many pictures and stories I have seen online of "expensive name brand" crossbows that have blown up/cracked.

Yea the Xbow junkie part is for sure the truth... I can feel it already:banana:

I got my new longer arrows and am now wondering which ones would be better to use weight wise.

-The ones it came with are 14" 2018 shaft (14 7/8" overall) and weigh 291 grains.

-The bigger ones are 16" 2219 shaft (17 1/4" overall) and weigh 435 grains.

What do you think would be best to use with this 150lb crossbow?

Well, the light ones should be faster but, will lose momentem faster as well and not penetrate as we good down range...and may not be as accurate ...on the other hand some of that may not matter if you are just shooting targets...I say try em both and just see what shoots best ...I would like to see how the xbow and bolts do with fixed broadheads ..the vanes look pretty small ...I may get me one to play with as well could make an ok turkey set up..it would be light to run and gun with anyway...let us know how it shoots ...

I have messed with one of these x-bows and used the 2018's cut to 14" with Blazer Broadhead vanes and 85 gr tips.I was reasonably pleased with the performance/accuracy.I have another thread started on this earlier,,,and am still tempted to purchase one(i'm a bow junkie). In all reality I think it's more a toy than a hunting bow,,,,,ALTHOUGH,,,,,,,,don't know for sure until one would try it?????????!!!!!!!!

if i had a choice it would depend on what i wanted to do with it, if i was just gonna target shoot it then the lighter ones would probably be ok. but if i was gonna try and hunt with it then the heavy ones would be alot better, i think although it may not be too fast that it would still be a good turkey crossbow and who knows once you shoot it the bow may be good enough for deer as well. i have a horton tacoma thats 150lbs, i shoot 20" arrows in it with 125 grain tips and i've gotten 266fps thru a chrono. thanks

The main thing I am concerned with is damaging the crossbow by shooting too light of an arrow. Although I will be putting Bowjax on the limbs and string silencers etc... Not sure if that will help or not.

After reading arrow weight for fast xbows I really feel that the 435 grain arrows are just too heavy for this crossbow. But I am not a pro at this, that is why I am wanting to get opinions.

I just ordered a dozen aluminum inserts for the 2219 arrows. I finally decided I will just cut the arrows down until they are a more acceptable weight for this Xbow. What weight do you guys think I should shoot for? Please give me your opinions.

Thank You

I will be sure to let everyone know how the trigger is and have video and pictures of the tests.

There is another post here on ArcheryTalk about these Xbows by justanuff. Here is a direct quote which he says the trigger is really nice:

I'm looking for some info/advice/your experience on these cheap/inexpensve recurve crossbows that you see on e-bay.My neighbor brought over one of these to get set up.After setting up with 15" 2018 bolts,,fletched with 2" blazer broadhead vanes and some shots at 20 yrds, both with 85 grain and a Magnus Buzzcuts...equipped with a red dot scope,,,I must say I was impressed. It was very accurate,,pretty quiet,,and the trigger was really nice.Next was the chrono test which was 219 fps,,,the bolts weighed out at 320 grains,,k.e.=34 lbs.Not bad.Certainly e-nuff to shoot a deer.NOW I"M THINKIN OF GETTING ONE OF THESE!!!!I want to further experiment with arrow weight and shots from 30 yrds.
