Swan Lake, is that worth doing more research and looking into?
Yeah, it's worth looking into more...cause it is a draw only area.

Study the info MDC has available on their website, pick an archery only area and use google earth to find some funnels away from parking lots before you get here. Ground truth them and then park it for as many hours as you can handle. There is no reason you can't get into a decent buck. I also think the old rule of "north of MO river" is becoming less of a rule these days. Before I would drive that far blindly, I would spend time on the phone with state biologists. Call them with very specific questions about specific CAs, such as "Was XYZ conservation area hit hard with EHD in the last 3 years?" and you will get some excellent answers from them.

Good luck

Aside from the Conservation Areas, there are Fed lands that are accessible as well. Used to hunt one of those areas as my only ground and keep thinking about going back. Shoot me a pm if interested. Also - read up on any Conservation areas you're thinking about, many are Managed Hunts only and the application period has passed.

Theres no place N of I70 that your going to walk away from the crowd. Myself I would look for small areas that are overlooked and more importantly don't look like deer country.

If your going to go big areas to "get away" from the crowds then bring a boat and hit Truman or LOZ. The last 3 deer I know of that hovered around the 200" mark were along way S of I70.

I hunted private land in Northern MO last year, but talked to some guys in our motel that were on public. They were seeing more deer than we were... shoot me a PM.

hey now don't tell everyone !!!!

Here is a link to a Google Earth layer that adds all of the Missouri CAs to Google Earth works great !!!! This is how I found my place. As far as crowds on the CA's I have hunted them the past 3 years 9-10 days each year and I have seen a grand total of 1 other hunter. I love Missouri public land hunting.

I use the Google Earth with the MDC area maps on another page so I can confirm things. See you all in November.

Also don't ignore the small areas. And one last thing, be cautious of dirt roads that lead to your area they can be NASTY !!!

NO we were not. There is no DEER in northern Missouri. LOL just kidding. We killed a small doe that week.....STEVEWES killed a stud on a private land spot.

Check out deer ridge in NE Mo. Nice campgrounds, lots of deer and not too much pressure in the bow season. Best of luck.
My first deer was taken at Deer Ridge. Great place to hunt. The biggest key to Deer Ridge that I found is to hunt the people, not the deer. Let the people bring the deer to you because probably 1/2 of them wont venture more than 300 yards from the campgrounds.

My dad and I had a really funny hunt there one time. We were hunting the creek bottom about a hundred yards from the small campground (the one not near the lake) and we watched a group of 6-7 deer do circles in and out of the creek bottom, with the movement of the hunters walking down the trail heading towards the power cut on the eastern border. we Just could do nothing but laugh.

Definitely a climber unless you want to be moving around a hang on every day or so. I would look at coming towards the end of october. Might beat some of the rut hunters out. Also look at archery only areas. You will have a much better chance at seeing a mature buck. Regardless, you'll have a good time and see some beautiful country.
