This season i have been very limited on time. Between college and work i may only get 2 or 3 evenings to hunt in a week. Gun season opens Saturday so i have been trying my damnedest to get one down with my bow. I had a lot of close calls, just couldn't seal the deal. I didn't really listen to the whole "don't pass up anything on the first day that you would shoot on the last" and passed a nice doe on the first day, but got some wonderful photos of her. Then i went a couple weeks without seeing a deer, and was really wondering what i was thinking passing that deer. Well today was the last day i had to hunt before gun season opens. The weather was not great, steady rain all day, heavy at times. I figured i might as well get out there any way; hell, you never know what could happen. I chose to stay dry and sit in a blind along a corn field. Around 3:00 the rain started to let up and sure enough, a doe and two young entered the field right where i expected to see them. I watched them for several minutes as they fed toward me and my adrenaline was really starting to flow. One of the fawns was only about 15 yards from the blind at one point and something down the hill got him spooky and he started to lead the other deer back into the woods. Well, for no apparent reason, the mature doe of the group decided to make a 180 and head right for me. She got to about 30 yards and turned broadsided and started to parallel my position. She ended up walking to a spot i had ranged at 20 yards earlier and i stopped her and let the arrow fly at 3:15. The shot looked high at first and did not pass through, but left and right was perfect, still, I was concerned
ukey:. Around 3:23 i heard thrashing in the brush but assumed it was one of the fawns running away. I called my dad and had him come home from work to help me out, by the time he would get to the land would give the deer about an hour before we started tracking. He finally showed up after what seemed like a week
We began slowly tracking the deer through the field, we could see her tracks and found some hair and blood. We were considering playing it safe and waiting till the morning to continue, but wanted to at least see where she entered the woods. Well, where she entered the woods is where she died! Not 20 yards from where i last saw her. Turns out the shot was good, i got the top of both lungs and she was down in 100 yards. It was one of the most memorable and probably the most exciting bow kill to date, something about being eye level with a deer at 20 yards and getting them with a doe is just awesome, the adrenaline rush was the most intense one i have ever had. I couldn't be any happier with this deer, and my decisions in the hunt. I know that's a lot to read, but damn am i pumped!
