Have any of you new york state bow hunters ever had any luck with rattling horn's. I have never had any luck. I have had outstanding results with a grunt call and one response from a can call. The reason why I am asking is this sunday I saw a 130-140 class 10 point come by my stand about 45 yards. I grunted to him and he turned and came in to 35 yards but never offered a shot.(Too much brush and bad shot angle )He looked around for a minute or so and turned and walked off. I'm thinking once the rut kicks in he might be the one to try rattling in. He is an awsome animal and I have not had a deer make my heart pound like that since my first buck. I can only hope he show's himself again......

Your Info

I DO KNOW SOME GOOD DETAILS ON THIS TOPIC. FOR ONE ANYTHING IS WORTH A TRY, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO A 10 POINT BUCK. BUT.... IN THE AREA WHERE WE HUNT THE BUCK TO DOE RATIO IS VERY WEAK. IN AREAS WHERE THIS RATIO IS A LOT GREATER THE RATTLE WILL BE MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE. WHEN YOU RATTLE YOU ARE ENTICING A FIGHT BETWEEN BUCKS. THIS IS NOT A COMMON ACT AMONG DEER OF THIS AREA. WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT TEXAS, ILLINOIS, ETC. WHERE THERE IS MORE COMPETITION AMONGST MATURE BUCKS. THATS WHY WHEN U WATCH A HUNTING VIDEO WHERE THEY ARE RATTLING IN BIG BUCKS, DOUBLE CHECK WHERE THE VIDEO WAS MADE!!!!!!! NO WHERE NEAR US!!!!!!!!!:pukey:

In my areas in NY (LI and Steuben County) the doe/buck ratio is way out of whack - I think it scares more than it entices, never had any luck in NY - had a lot of success in Pike County Illinois last year with rattling.

good point reflexcat...I was hunting in oklahoma, first ever archery hunt out there, first moring, couldnt of been light for more than 1/2 hour, i took out my rattle back and said let me give this a try. I didnt even have time to put the thing down and there was a buck charging straight at me, I was amazed, I said Holy S@#$ this really works.

I have rattled in bucks in St. Lawrence, Hamilton, Columbia, Dutchess, and Tompkins counties. Even in areas with out of whack buck to doe ratios, it still works, just not as well. Every buck has a different attitude. I have seen 1.5 old bucks run to the horns and other shy away. Also, in my county (Columbia) there are so few mature bucks that most 1.5 old bucks never get beat up by a larger bucks, so they will readily come to the horns, they don't know any better.

I also rattled in a few bucks in IL last year, including one nice 130" 8 point, and look forward to doing it again this year.

Yep

It works.........just remember that the 30 minute video you just watched was shot after 10 days of hunting......and they get 45 seconds of footage.
NOTHING works all the time......I have rattled in WAY more does than bucks in NY and many of the bucks were 1.5 yr olds.
Even in IA , IL, and MO......we have had a LOT of response from SMALL bucks.
Just my opinion.....but how you are set up to rattle and the area you choose to rattle in are more important than the state or county.
Try it.......chnces are that any deer who comes in will NEVER have been rattled in by a hunter (in NY)..........just keep trying.
To all of those who say it "spooks" small bucks......every time you see a small buck way out of range.....Rattle.....then see if he turns tail and runs....or stops and maybe even comes closer.
Any buck with an agenda will keep right on trucking....but most will at least investigate.....or stay around and not leave as fast. Like I said, NOTHING works textbook all the time.
Good Luck.
