Hello all! This is my first post to Archery Talk. Ive been creeping around a bit, absorbing all I can in the short amount of time i've been here. I'll be hunting with a bow for the first time this year. The seasons here in Idaho favor the archery crowd a bit more if you don't draw a good tag in the fact that the seasons are longer and better timing. I have been practicing quite a bit lately with an older Browning bow that I have, but I will be getting a newer Hoyt from my brother in law when he gets his new one before the season. I am trying to get a feel for what to buy and what not to buy in terms of gear. I am 5'11" tall, 210 pounds, and have a 29" draw length. I bought some Carbon Express 30" arrows, and have been shooting them with 125 grain practice tips. I plan on shooting both deer and elk with a bow.

I was walking through WalMart the other day and noticed they carry some broadheads that I believe were Allen 100 grain. They cost about $15 for a 3 pack. Am I better off to just throw my money at a set of Muzzy's or Magnus'? Thanks for any help guys!

Yes. Stay away from the Allen broadheads. Out of the two heads you've mentioned, Magnus all the way! Best warranty in archery. If you bend or break a blade, Mike will send you a new head no questions asked. Magnus is one of the best company's I've ever dealt with in archery and really anything for that matter.

Any of their broadheads will suit you fine. Stingers or black hornets. I don't know your draw weight or arrow weight, but I would say stingers would probably be a little better for elk because they have a more gradual blade angle than the black hornets. Not taking away from the black hornets but apples to apples the stingers are going to penetrate a little better by design.

True Story....buddy of mine started into archery, a do it yourself type guy. So he buys the whole 9 yards, asks me NOTHING. Which is cool if that's what floats his boat. Anyway one day he comes up to me as says, "so have you ever had any issues with broadheads shooting different than your Field Tips?" . I say of course, there is a lot that goes into that. Long and short of it, he missed a doe at 17 yards he saw his arrow sail high and about 2 feet left. we made plans to go to the range because I had a block to shoot into. first off I asked to see the tips...they were Allen. I screwed them on his arrows, put the point on the wood bench and spun the arrow. The wobble on that arrow was INSANE. I checked all 6 tips and he had ONE maaaybe two that had a chance to hit the target at 20 yards.

SO I say alright, let's shoot, but before you shoot would you like to put any bets down on how they shoot? he says "not really, why?". I said "out of those 6 arrows, i'll give you $5 for every arrow that hits the block at 20 yards, you give me $1 for every miss". He was all over that!!!

Results, we broke even, you do the math.

I spun on a steel force phat head, Nap Nitron, SLick trick and a Tru Fire T1. EVERY arrow was in the bull or within 3 inches of center.

NEVER buy Allen brand anything. It's complete garbage.

btw, Magnus makes a great head, they will suite you fine.
