What is the best Buck decoy besides the Dan Smith decoy

I'm looking to purchase a buck decoy for my Kansas hunt, I don't want to spend 700.00 dollars on a Dan Smith decoy, so what is another option? Many thanks!

Im in kansas and i use a $100 primos forkhorn with nothing but excellent results. Used to use the boss buck, but its way too big of body imo. You dont want a large bodied decoy that is going to make the deer think twice about picking a fight

i like montana decoys. dreamy doe, feeding doe, estrous betty, and there are a couple buck decoys as well. i've had much better luck with dreamy doe than i have with bucks. and you can carry a whole herd of deer in your pack

A lot of ppl will probably say the Boss Buck...I have it and the babe. The buck is big and it is the noisiest thing I've ever tried to take into the woods. You almost have to set it up before u walk in or else the legs, head and nuts that hold the legs on will bang around and make all kinds of racket. I usually take it to a spot I wanna use it and leave it there most of the rut and just take it down and hide it when I'm not huntin. There is probably a way to spray them with foam or somethin to quiet them down and if anyone has tried it, I'd like to hear if it made a difference or not. If u want a mobile decoy, I'd look for a different one than the Boss Buck. It is realistic tho.

Im thinking about getting the Rinehart Doloma Buck Decoy. it look interesting and light weight.

Can anyone share their experience with this decoy, good or bad??

I like mine. Little bit of wind gives it some movement because it pivots on the ground stake. Not too heavy, breaks down well for transport, the ears are pinned back in an aggressive manner. Because it’s made of the Rinehart foam, it’s also very quiet during transport as well as when it’s deployed. The only thing I don’t like is that you have to be careful when attaching the legs to the body because the foam can crack if you try to force it. For the money, I think it’s a good purchase and would buy it again if I had to.

I know you said you don't want to spend the money on the DSD, but it truly is the nicest thing out there. I have one of the first ones they ever made and it is awesome. Since then they have made them about 1/3 lighter weight (ACE 2.0 material and newer molding technology) which makes them even better. Simple to set up and dead quiet to carry/setup.

I had a Boss Buck before my DSD. While effective, the thing was LOUD to both carry in and set up. The hard plastic made it sound like you were carrying a bass drum through the woods. It was also a pain in the back side to set up in the dark.

The first decoy I ever used was a delta. That thing wasn't realistic at all. The first night out I had a spike chase a doe right by the decoy. From right to left. When I turned back to the right there was a 10 pointer at 20 yards and closing fast on the decoy. I ended up shooting him at 10 yards and only a couple yards from the decoy.
After that I went with carry lite decoys. More realistic and also more noise.

I also carried in decoys to certain stands and left them till I was done hunting the rut. Just lay them in some brush to hide them. All scents used get sprayed on vegitation around the decoy when it's set up. That way the decoy is scent free.

I'm really curious about trying the Montana Decoys. They seem easy to transport and setup. I just can't see being able to stay quiet on the hike in or at the stand with any kind of full 3D decoy.

With decoys in mind - what's the best time of the season to use them. Recently, I've heard that early to mid October is a great time.

My carrylite gets a lot of action...I have a few over the years as they don't take a beating real well...had two destroyed in the great state of KS...I agree with hntnskn if you can find a decent cheap 3d foam target...add a white feather boa for a tail and to the ears you're in good shape...easy to transport, super quiet and they will take a beating...trust me I've seen it with my own eyes...

I agree the flambeau boss is real looking, but its awkward, loud and if the first buck to show up is a 130" testosterone infused 10-point the flambeau is going down...maybe never to rise again, especially on that hunt...

I've owned several, including the Flambeau boss buck and boss babe, Primos Scar, Carry-Lite EZ-Buck Deer Decoy, and this blow up thing I got at Cabelas (it drew in a 13 pointer the very 1st time out, but I returned it to Cabelas WHICH may have been a mistake!). This thing was ugly, but it worked.

While I didn't hunt with it, I was about to purchase the Rinehart Doloma Series Buck Decoy last year, hoping that it would lighten AND tighten up my load a bit. Turns out I wasn't to impressed with that at all. MIGHT work, but in the store I just wasn't feeling it with the Rinehart.

The Flambeau boss buck and boss babe are the worst of the entire bunch, by far. They are hard to even get to stand up.

The Primos Scar is the only full size decoy that I've kept for any amount of time. It has a rubber coating on it that keeps it from being noisy while hauling and setting up, which is nice. The legs go on super easy, the head moves with the slightest wind.

I do own several of the Montana 2D decoys, and I've killed over them more then once now. Don't be put off by them, as you can carry them with you on every hunt and use them. They keep me using decoys more then not. Often I'll use my Primos Scar with 2-4 of my Montana decoys. Iced a few deer last year.

I have only ever hunted with the scar face decoy and have had wonderful results. Like many others have said the 3D decoys are definitely a little noisy to set up, but I know for a fact that my Primos scar face has drawn in and given opportunities at deer than I would of had without him. The thing I like most about the scarface is the head and neck and the tail swivel in the wind which gives the deer confidence that its not just some funny looking piece of plastic out there.

TTT, thinking about getting a buck decoy for this year. Any other recommendations? I have DSD turkey decoys and very happy with them, not unwilling to pay the price for a DSD buck decoy, IF it is head and shoulders above the rest...

I love my primos scar face, it's not nearly as bulky as the boss buck. Don't get anything that absorbs scent! True the harder plastic is louder, but the foam type (similar to 3D targets) are impossible to get scent free. I hated the old one I used, if the buck was a shooter, I had to be shooting before he got downwind.

I watched a few newer videos on the Rinehard Doloma Decoys and I decided to give them a try. Lighter, smaller, easier to put up, and hopefully that movement will ice a nice Buck.

I sold off my Boss Babe today. THING was to much to haul around, and the legs were a royal pain to install. HOPING the Doloma is light years better!
