What's your experience with scentlok?

I've used scentlok several years now with mixed results. Best I can tell I'm doing everything right. I wear a scentlok jacket and pants along with gloves,a headcover, and rubber boots. I put them through the dryer cycle as recommended. I dont spray down the scentlok, but I spray my boots,binos,stand,ect... In spite of my best efforts,if a deer gets directly downwind they will as likely as not detect enough scent to spook or eventually leave. Am I missing something? Also I know theres other scent control methods out there....what has worked for you?

Bought sentlok base layers, socks, gloves and mask. Washed my outer layers in scent free detergent and hung them up to dry. Sprayed down all my gear with scent killer and took a shower with scentless soap. Wore sweatpants and teeshirt to my hunting location that i also washed in scent free detergent and air dried them as well and got dressed before i headed into the woods.

After all that i still got winded by a nice buck. My scent lock layers have been sitting in the closet since. Thats the most extreme Im willing to go scent control wise so if theres more to that regiment Im not willing to go that far.

I do not for one second believe the Scentlok carbon shmarbon bologna. That said, I do actually have a couple of their jackets and a couple of pairs of pants because Ive had good luck with the quality and comfort of them and would buy again but I will never buy into the whole activated carbon thing. I'm careful with my scent and I try to play the wind as I was taught by my father who hunted his whole life with an old wool jacked dried by a wood stove and he got a buck nearly every year that I can remember.

I have literally worn a mix of scentlok and scentblock, as many as four layers though I guess only 2 layers were carbon/charcoal and got winded as much as I ever had.

The design of some of the scent blocker made it worth it to me, fit and function was great. If you are looking to escape being winded it will not happen with those clothes.

Only thing that has worked for me is ozone, not 100% of course but I have seen it work. No luck with the bee smoker either!

Scent lock works but for most people only about an hour.

most new stuff has been on the rack so long you have to do the reactivating process and store in one of them scent bags.

even then it’s only a reduction method.

hecs for instance loses its stuff when wet from sweat.

I have 2 Scentblocker sets. (jacket & pants). Got them cheap on Sierra 6 or 7 years ago. They are good on their own from 45*-60* and down to 30* with good layering. They have 'windblocker', but it doesn't seem to be too effective, IMHO. They are dead quiet and comfortable. The pockets and zipper setups are great and they've proven to be very durable for me. Don't know if the current product lines are of the same quality, but I've been very happy with mine. The scentblocking properties were never really a consideration. I treat them the same as my other clothes, wash in scent free detergent, throw in the Ozone tote before the hunt, and approach my stand properly and hunt into the wind.

I always like these posts. It absolutely can be reactivated. Do I believe any of it is enough to fool a whitetail? No. But there is absolutely a method for re-activiation.
Edit: "re-activation" is not really the term that should be used. Re-activating the carbon and re-activating the garment are two different things.

To the OP question, no, it's not going to save you 100% of the time of a deer gets downwind. Their nose can smell the chilidog on your breath today that you're gonna eat tomorrow!

So, you can google search the lawsuit and find the issue of the lawsuit was that it doesn't eliminate 100% odor and it can't be regenerated 100%. It WAS tested and proven to adsorb 94-99% of human odor and can be regenerated to 80-85% when used in a residential, dryer on high heat for 40-45 minutes. So yeah, it works. But, a good hunter should always try to use the wind in their favor!

But regardless of that and regardless if you can replicate their tests yourself, here's why I'm still a buyer of Scentlok products
1. Quality of clothing is top notch. I've had some pieces for 20 years now and are in great shape. I want clothing that is comfortable and going to last. For the money, SL is as good as anything out there in terms of material and craftmanship.
2. Camo doesn't fade. Not sure what treatment they use, but my camo colors look as good today as they did new.
3. It can't hurt. If the carbon allows me a 10% better chance of fooling a deer's nose, confusing him, and getting him to stand where I need him to to make the shot, so be it. We do alot of things to gain even a slight advantage over our quarry, and I'm going to buy and wear top qualify camo anyway, so why not add a little extra possible advantage to success?

I follow the steps, but not religiously. Do I get winded, occasionally. But my experience has been more positive than negative. I've had bucks come in to rattling (downwind purposely) and I could tell they caught a little something in the air, but they still ended up where I needed them to be. I've had old does that were born when Lincoln was president, those old cows can't be fooled. Any stink is a freak-out, stomp off, about face turn back the way they came. But I can tell you that I hardly ever get blown at from a distance and I've had more deer come in from the wrong direction that I did without Scentlok clothing, so I'm going to wear it, cause like I said, it can't hurt.

Just my .02 cents, good luck this season.

I have an early to mid season scentlock set for about five years now and I hope it never wears out. I couldn't care less about the carbon. I don't buy into that. Its the fit and function of it that I like so much. Very comfortable, absolutely silent and pockets that are laid out perfectly for me. I wear it as far into the cold weather as I can till I start wearing my cold weather stuff. They don't make that particular set anymore.

I’ve had success with scent lok clothing. If anything it is great camo that is quiet, durable and comfortable. Even if the scent and carbon thing doesn’t work, it’s still good camo. Now, wouldn’t pay full price for it because there are always sales. If you are not signed up with them to receive emails I highly recommend doing that. At least once a month I get emails for 50% off.

This is what I did. Signed up and immediately got a code for 10% off. Waited a bit ans saw they were having a closeout sale and got a new full season jacket at 50% off. Since I had the discount code, decided to try their new heated vest. I've been able to use it a couple chilly days and that on-demand electric heat is nice.

If you're buying it for the "scent reduction" aspect, don't. Instead, buy it for the quality of the gear which is very good. I have a Scentlok full season jacket and pants that are around 10 years old and I have hunted hard in them. Still is good shape and very comfortable. I was looking to get some new stuff and went with Scentlok again for the updated full season jacket and the forefront pants. Both are mid-season weight clothing. Water repellent fabric and again very well made and comfortable. Plenty of pockets for storage.

It's quality hunting camo that will last for years and not break the bank.

All that said, if a deer gets down wind of you, it won't matter how much scent elimination/masking you try. Your hunt of that animal is on borrowed time.

I'm right along with most above... I have a couple sets I got on sale many years ago. Couldn't honestly care less about the scent control, but love them for fit and function. Very quiet and well made. Last year, after probably 13 years one of the zippers on my jacket pocket broke.. I was pretty bummed. Other than that.. still going strong. Both are pretty light weight but can fit over many layers.
Play the wind and don't worry about it.

I find that their garments are constructed really well and they hold up and after the season typically you can find them for 50% off and at that price point represent great value. Also the suits that I bought were in predator camo and that's IMO a great camo.

As far as the scentlok feature itself, I wouldn't know because I hunt deer and I play the wind.

Remember that you are not completely eliminating your scent, but trying to reduce your scent footprint so that the deer think you are further away than you actually are. I use Scentlok even when hanging stands. It works, but it is not a panacea, first and foremost I choose where to hunt based on the wind, not because of clothing. I choose to wear it in hopes I am less detected on my approaches and exits, also done with wind mind, and while on stand. I also hope it helps when deer come in from a downwind side. As for your situation, are the deer on alert already for some other reason? Movement? Scent left on the ground where you might be crossing deer trails, which I try to avoid? What about your own physiology? Smoker? I quit using all scented deodorant, lotions shampoos a month before season to flush the smells out. Do you urinate from your stand? Yes, urine eventually breaks down and doesn't bother deer, but I carry a urinal bag and bag it while on stand, deer come in and all of a sudden a foreign urine smell is there, may put them on alert, drink coffee prior to hunt? Urine can smell like coffee until it breaks down. Do other people hunt where you do and do nothing, which could put them on alert, then if they get a small whiff of you, which wouldn't bother them otherwise but they get big whiffs from other hunters. I too like ScentLok for the quality, warmth, and have multiple sets for wind, rain etc and if I get even a small edge due to the science of carbon (being a RN I understand the science of smelling, smells and odors and how to eliminate them ). Wind swirls and even if there is no detectable wind there are thermals moving air so of course deer may wind you despite all your best efforts. I do not rely on ScentLok to help me kill more deer, I rely on basic woodman ship, knowledge and a bit of luck. Bagged my 3rd doe today, went in to the downwind side of one of my food plots, way early and a route that actually sucks, but it is better than a straight shot easy route for wind, noise and visual. Re-evaluate and remember many times we want to blame our equipment (I don't blame my Rages when I don't put it where it does the most damage), oh how do you store your gear? I have a ScentLok Ozone chamber that I use only to refresh, I store in a ScentLok air tight bag and some of the Hefty vacuum cleaner bags that you pull the air out. I also use a Ozone generator while on stand, again I don't rely on it but looking for every advantage. Beat the nose, beat the deer.

I definitely try to hunt the wind, but theres always days that the wind swirls or deer come from the downwind direction. And no I dont smoke or urinate from my stand. I typically dont use attractants or cover scents either. I have used nose jammer and ozonics along with my scentlok but haven't really figured out if they work or not. I store my scentlok in an airtight scentlok bag.

I have lite and midweight Scentlok Jacket/pants and really like it. For me it’s a great fit, soft & quiet, good quality and I feel as sneaky in it as anything else I’ve ever owned. On sale it’s very affordable.
Scent reduction.....get higher in your tree!
