High price clover with a buck on the bag. I doubt it'll do any better than Durana or anything else you can get from a coop or feed store but it'll sure cost you more. Maybe plant a little of it and a little of generic or durana and see if there is a difference.

 

the only reason I ask is my father-in-law used it and it grew fantastic and drew in lots of deer. Just like you said, I think it is over priced so I'm trying to buy seed from a COOP and would like to try and match the formulation.

 

should state what is in there right on the bag, I have had fantastic results with it. It is a few different clovers mixed together.

 

32.42% Alex Berseem Clover
22.21% Insight Ladino Clover
10.75% Excel Ladino Clover

 

That's about 65%. What makes up the remaining 35% of the mix?

 

Probably seed coating and other inert matter.

 

I frost seeded a couple acres with it last March and it came in fantastic!

 

I had Durana and was not impressed with the use. I terminated it and replanted with Whitetail Institute and the deer are using it much more. I'm very happy with it.

I have planted durana and imperial whitetail clover before. The imperial whitetail clover was much better. The deer and turkey really ate the imperial whitetail clover. Unless something has changed the imperial whitetail clover is not a mix of clovers. It is a clover which was developed especially for deer browse.

I suggest that you call the whitetail institute and ask them about their products.

 

Imperial Is a mix of clovers. Whitetail institute did not " invent" a new clover. They use varieties they claim are cold climate Hardy.

All commercially sold seed is required to have a bag tag. Typically gives percent of contents such as this for example 25% red clover , 70% Dutch white clover, 3% weed seed, 2% inert matter....then it also tells you the germination % as some of the seed is not viable ...

 

Years ago whitetail institute said that they developed the strand of imperial clover. Now they are saying that they mix other clovers with the imperial clover. I would not be interested in the new mix.

and buy from a seed company cheaper i have tried just about all kinds
and am back to whitetail clover and it is the easiest to grow
and for some odd reason whitetails love it

 

I've found the local mill price is catching up to the Whitetail Institute in price. Bought Imperial for the first time last year at fleet store for close to what I've been paying at the feed/seed mill. Used to be a lot cheaper at the feed/seed mill.

 

I agree...also when you get something like bin run oats you may be getting alot of weed seed with it. I have had good luck with Frigid Forage and Whitetail Institute products ... Still.will get my fertilizer at the co-op though.

 

It’s great stuff. Is it better than xxxx? Maybe. I didn’t have good usage from Duranna. I also terminated mine and replanted in Whitetail. Waiting to see if it was a good move.

 

(Bob),buck on bag mix is 10x the price and not worth it. Look at the bag tag. Buy the same mix from your local feedmill for nothing.

 

There is Different Brands of "Clover" some are grow better in poor soils whiles others don't. I f you have a poor soil like sand mainly Ladino & Aslike seem to do better and less $ If you have good Soil and does not need a lot of lime, and Fertilizer then you might have better results.The key is how much rain soon after You Plant so to say it is "better" is tough especially for the Money. Maybe if You can find it as Year End Clearance Sale or on Sale at a good discount Price maybe... But again not all AG Suppliers offer the same seed brands some even sell WI Products but the Price is more...I found some Fusion last year for 29.99 and is usually 34.99 and I really did not seen any difference from plant other Clover Seed I find on Clearance Bio Logic, Evolved Harvest, Tecomate & Antler King and use these again maybe because Like WI they are to be made for Deer & Turkey Plots and You can find them for Much less like at TSC, Mill Fleet & Farm and SportsmanGuide to name a few Right now is the time year end sale / clearance. Spent what You Want but I have seen little difference when I have planted many different brand seed brands the big thing is Rain after Planting makes how good your Results are and we have little control over some times it rains with a few days and other times a week or more. And does the turkeys find your plot seed and eat up? Many things can make a Difference of one's Results... You see when some can't wait wait to plant because they only have a slim chance to get the planting do done to work and family schedules and that can make the difference hot weather / or cool Weather... As to ones results... Some might think it is the Brand seed plant when they might have got a good rain a few times right after they planted have not seen any mention this part as to their good Results... And Wildlife change what they like to eat / browse. I have apple trees they once Hammered and now they don't eat the apples like they do eat the apple tree leaves...when apples were right next to the leaves... So again what other browse is around can make a difference...as to results some get.

I do know it has Alex berseem clover, insight ladino, and at one time had advantage ladino which was the one they developed. You can buy advantage at the co-op much cheaper. But just depends on where ya live

You can call them and talk to them about their seeds, customer service and help is A+, remember that regardless of seed brand or mix, a soil test is highly recommended to get the results you want.

On to a question I have about seed blends. How do you effectively plant a blend? Lots of these products contain grains and clover. Grains need be to planted at depth and clover pretty much right on top. Doesn’t it make more sense to plant the grain and drill it in or drag it on and then broadcast the clover? If you do both at once wouldn’t you either cover up clover seed or leave grain on top of ground hurting germination? I alway do it in 2 steps.

Yes, I go both routes depending on plot size. I just don't think it necessitates bashing someone over their new purchase..

Regarding your question on seed blends, it really depends on what you have to work with. Personally, I 1) disc 2) spread larger cereal seeds 3) cultipack 4) spread smaller clover/brassica seed then 5) cultipack again. In that order.

If you have access to a drill, I would probably just mix everything together and go shallow on the drill, 1/4" depth so you're not burying clover/brassicas too deep. If dragging a harrow or fence, I'd drag over larger seed and seed smaller ones after that as you've suggested.

If your seed is already premixed, I'd probably drag/harrow first, then spread seed, then pack in.. And hope it rains soon!

 

It is sad that some just cannot accept WI Products? I get that it is not what You can find locally great yet some mentioned in the Thread are not readily available maybe where they are sna special ordering it is an added cost. Plus the fat getting to the Supplier on a Weekend when they have limited hours is yet another issue. Then When some post How Good it Has done for them other cannot accept that either. Why would they still be in business if they are Selling their Products and have for many years! And they have put the time in to Find what some Deer prefer usre the other Clovers and seed mention deer will eat but is better who knows but the deer in your area. For me I don't use all WI Products I have used their "Fusion" & "Chic Magnet" as well as have their "Extreme" in my poor soil spots. As they offer the Seed in small amounts and for me It come straight to my Door no added gas to go and get it from a supplier which also adds to my costs. Sure I do go there for Cereal Grains like Winter Rye but other than that. I do not do what others do as to size of Plots. And yes I have deer in all my plots Year Round I do not just plant for a "Kill Plot" as some do great for you I want the deer around year round which is another point. If you read or watch some videos most talk how year round food source is important take it for what it is worth. I do everything by hand no farm equipment as that s just again another added cost. And I have taken a few deer from in a few of them. But again Use what You Think is Best for YOU as some won't because there is a Big Buck Pictured on the bag or package. If The Product Works for some as it has that is good others will Never accept that it is a different Clover than what They can get. As like Buckwheat once I could get a 50 lb bag for $23 but now that Plots use it it has more than Double in Price to over 50 even from 2 AG Suppliers where it is to be better cost! So again what works best for you. I will continue using the Fusion in small bags and the Chic Magnet as a different variety of Clover and Chicory just to offer something Different for the Deer in My Area. Good Planting what ever you USE!
