Who wants to help fix AT?

When the harddrive croaked, so did about a month's worth of attachments. (October 15) You can see that when you sift through threads - pictures/files are missing from threads. As much as I have my hopes high on obtaining the dead harddrive from our server hosts, they are being resistant and it might not happen.

How can you help?
If, while logged in, you go to your "User CP" (top and left of this text), you can click on "Attachments" in the left menu, very bottom. This will list all of your attachments. Go through them and see if any of yours are missing. If they are, delete them, and repost them where you originally posted them.

That's it?
Well ... yah! That might seem like nothing, but it would be a great help to the community and the rebuild of this site. Though we make regular backups of everything in case of emergencies like this, the attachments folder is 10gigs. (9.6, but whose counting). To back that up takes -HOURS- and costs money, transferring it from AT to a different server. For that reason, we typically back it up once a month, on (or near) the 15th. In honor of that, Admin and I kindly request you help rebuild!

If it seems like a chore ... don't do it. Otherwise, help everyone out and let's put this back together.

Thanks! (pls bump this thread for a while, then I'll stick it)

Is there someway to repost them in the same place. I mean same post. Or just in the thread under a new post.

miked, are you telling us that you don't do regular backups of your forum code and data? Or that your hosting provider doesn't do it?

I do server administration for a living, mostly related to web servers and such. And I gotta say. You sure must like to play with fire if you aren't verifying your backups. Good luck to your recovery. I know how bad it sucks when things like this happen.

In order to actually be helpful, here's a suggestion. You might try writing some SQL queries to search your database for any posts that contain text related to attaching files. I'm sure there must be common html or phpbb text parameters that you can search for. Use that to come up with a list of all the posts that contain attachments, then figure out a way to do a massive find and replace of all the content that needs it.

Do it on a test database instance of course, no need to mess up your production database.

attachments

I hope I didn't mess up. I did as suggested and deleted the broken attachments. I reinserted them into new (identical) posts in the original threads. The problem is I can't seem to remove the original posts (now without attachments) from the original threads. Is there a way to delete these posts or am I locked out? Thanks for any light on this!

Harley.. you can't actually delete those original posts.. too much time has passed.. I wouldn't worry about it.. I have a feeling we'll have a lot of users with the same issues, just ignore the old posts where the attachments are missing.. eventually they'll get buried in the threads...
