Hi Fellow Archers,

I'm looking for ILF limbs for a new Gillo GT riser I picked up. Need advice on what to get. I'm upgrading from my 35# galaxy sage. Generally to up my game in target shooting at the advice of some of the more seasoned archers. They believe my scores are high enough that I was beginning to be limited by the bow. I think they are generally recommending medium or large limbs in the 32 to 36 lb range. Wanted to check with a broader community before I settle on anything.

Thanks for any insight!

Limb length is dependent of draw length AND personal preference.
Assuming a 25" riser, DL > 29" = mediums; >29" = longs.

Regarding which limbs, kinda depends on how much money you want to spend AND personal preferences.

Since it sounds like you're new to this, I'd go with a decent pair of limbs in the $200 or less range from Galaxy / WNS and see where it goes.

Thanks Viper... I assume you meant a "<" for the mediums. I think I'm right at 29" for my draw length lol so I supposed I could justify either.

Makes sense. I have a friend planning to lend me his 32 Lb WnW Professionalism limbs...I'll see how that goes but I think the equivalent to those are very expensive.

Shoot your ccurrent limbs on the new GT first; you'll have a lot of adjustment room to see is [and within reason how much] you might want to increase/decrease draw weight. Then after you get used to the riser see if you can borrow some higher end limbs and be honest with yourself if you actually feel the difference, and if that difference is actually something you prefer. As for having outgrown your equipment, imagine if Brady or Kim Wu Jin were shooting your bow, ar you shooting those types of scores? New equipment is great [I love new, expensive equipment], but might that money better influence your scores with some quality coaching...

Thanks. My current limbs aren't ILF. but my buddy said he will lend me his WnW limbs. I'll se how that feels. You definitely make a good point that I could pay for coaching. Maybe I'll beat my current mentors at the range before I seek out paid consultation. I definitely don't plan on buying anything too expensive for now. Just fun to step up to the olympic recurve/ILFs

Yeah, typing has never been my strong suit ;)

My DL is 28.5"-29" between field and target. I started with long limbs, changed to medium because they were supposed to be faster. Nope. Went back to longs and never looked back. String angle on the draw hand is more comfortable and it may be purely subjective, but long limbs do feel more comfortable to shoot.

There few, if any, hard rules, that's why I included the "personal" preference part.
Typically the longer the rig, the smoother at the cost of a few fps, while the shorter rig might give you (literally) a couple of fps at the cost of smoothness, especially at the far end.

That being said, unless a specific shooter were desperate for every last fps, or there was an anatomical need (usually a clearance issue) I would never suggest a 68" OR for a shooter with a 30" draw.

Viper is 100% correct, as usual 😁
Another factor is which length let's you get the better reference point on your nose. I shoot a bow that's slightly longer than my draw would usually indicate because if I use a 70" bow I struggle to get the string to touch my nose. This is also commonly cited as one reason the Korean ladies shoot much longer bows than most people would expect for their draw lengths
It's very much a personal preference question.
A minor benefit of medium limbs is that you'll have a wider choice of second hand kit to save money on, as it's the more common size.

Is your GT riser a Formula riser? If not then your current limbs should be ILF, which stands for "International Limb Fit," which describes probably the most common type of limb fitting.
